What Age Do German Shepherd Puppies Need to Be Before They Leave Home?

by Dogs.net on December 7, 2011

I am going to buy a german shepherd puppy, but I don't want to pick it up before Chirstmas, what age can they leave their mother? As i don't know what time to start looking around for puppies. Thanks for your help

8 weeks old minimum. Contact the German Shepherd Club of America for good breeders in your area.Or you can look at rescues in your area. http://petfinder.com/

I prefer getting my pups around 7-8 weeks, really no later.

Many working line breeders prefer to separate pups around 5 weeks from their mother and the rest of the litter, but most won’t rehome until 8 weeks.

It is only the law to wait for 8 weeks in 16 states…. I hardly call that the MAJORITY

I don’t know what kind of breeder you’re going to find last minute, but it sure wouldn’t be any breeder I would want to get a german shepherd from.

Contact your local schutzhund club, they should at least be able to point you towards a few decent breeders.

Remember, if it’s not WORKING lines, then it’s not a TRUE german shepherd, and it SHOULDN’T be bred

6 weeks is the absolute minimum. Many good people like 7 weeks. It is well documented that it must be well berfore 12 weeks.

The period between 6-12 weeks is a dangerous time. One sniff where a sick dog relieved itself in the last 6 months can bring on parvo or another life threatening disease. Fail to expose it to strangers, including men, women, children, noise, etc. and you could end up with a misfit you can’t take out in public. They also need continuing contact with other dogs, but it must be limited to ones you know are getting good care. The dangers of infection continue after 12 weeks, but the best time for socialization is ending.

No younger then 8 weeks old minimum. And if the pup will be about that age at Christmas, please wait at least 2-3 weeks after Christmas to bring home a puppy.

8 to 12 weeks. The longer with the mother and litter-mates, the better for the pup. You can always choose a young pup, put a bow on it, so you know which is the one you chose, and pick it up at a later age. Lots of people do this.

You don’t say where you live, but here is the table of states that have laws regarding how old puppies have to be. If your state isn’t listed here, any age will do;

The puppy should be at least 8 weeks, maybe 7 and a half weeks, but that’s a bit iffy already. MOST breeders (and 16 states) make it the law for 8 weeks for a reason. They need to be well socialized with their siblings and mothers in order to become a well-adjusted adult. If you are getting your shepherd, please do not get a German Shepherd bred for appearance. Those are plagued with health issues.
