Throw the ball and show him a treat, so that he comes to you. If he is playful and runs away, you may want to try with a long leash on and pull him slowly towards you.If he brings it back, pay more attention towards him than towards getting the ball from his mouth. Pet him, praise him and reward him-he’ll have to open his mouth to eat the treat.

My dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, who is 8 months old does the same thing.

If we throw him a ball or a stick, he’ll run after it and catch it, but won’t bring it back, he just stares at you from across the field whilst chewing it and if you try to take it from him he runs away.

I take dog treats with me when I take him on a walk and I have started to use them when we play fetch. I throw the stick for him then get out the treats. I’ll shout him showing him the treat, then when he runs over, (which he sometimes doesn’t) I tell him “drop it!” and when he finally drops the stick I give him the treat with lots of cuddles and praise and then I start the process over again.

He’s getting the hang of it now, but it’s slow progress.

Some dogs don’t learn, my friends dog had never learnt to fetch and he just chews on it.

I hope I helped, I suggest maybe trying the same method as I do, get his favourite treats out on a walk with you and give it a try, I’m not saying it’s definitely going to work, but it’s worth a try. :D

Fetching is an obsessive behavior. Call your dog’s breeder and have him/her refer you to a reputable sheepdog trainer, in your area, and get the dog on livestock. You can also sign up for obedience or agility courses.
