How Hard Is It to Train a German Shepherd to Hunt?

I have experience training other dogs to hunt, but that is what they were breed to do. I would really like to get a German Shepherd, but how difficult would it be for me to train one to hunt?

Abigal M October 28, 2008 at 12:22 pm: It takes about a whole year for any breed of dog to learn how to hunt. Start by teaching him basic comands such as sit shake stay come roll over play dead……………. You get the point!

I think it would be harder to train GSD’s to hunt than a breed that was meant for hunting.. they were bred for herding and guarding, not really for tracking and retrieving. They are pretty versatile as a breed tho, so its not “impossible” to train one for hunting.. but I dont think they’d make a very successful hunting dog.
