The English Cocker, more commonly referred to as just a Cocker Spaniel, is a medium sized dog that is well know for their long droopy ears and their almond shaped eyes. They have silky hair that is slightly wavy and can come in a huge verity of colors, from particolors, tricolors, roam, and solid colors (on a solid colored dog a small white mark on the chest is the only discoloration allowable). They should have a defined stop, and a bright, intelligent expression. Cocker Spaniels are a compact dog and should have strait forelegs, tight 'cat like' feet with plenty of feathering on their front legs.

History. One of the oldest spaniel breeds, the Cocker Spaniel can be traced back to 14th century Spain, however at this time all spaniels were categorized as being the same, then depending on their size used to either spring game or flush out woodcock. It was these differences that led to the official separation of the breed into the Springer Spaniels, and the Cocker Spaniels in 1892, they also split the general 'spaniel' breed into other separate breeds that we know today. During the 1930's the Cocker Spaniel became the most popular breed throughout the UK and remained so for almost 30 years.

Temperament. The Cocker Spaniel is an intelligent and sturdy dog; they are loving, affectionate and excellent with children. However, A Cocker Spaniel is in fact a wonderful dog, they are gentle, playful and make some of the best companions. They are an outgoing dog, who when properly socialized, will easily take to strangers without any negative behavior.

Health Issues. Cocker Spaniels have an average life span of around 10-12 years which is just a bit lower than average for a dog of their size. The most common medical problems they can suffer from are skin conditions, cataracts, deafness (6%), heart murmurs, and benign tumors. Due to their long ears they can also be prone to a lot of ear infections and as with a lot of dogs they can also suffer from hip dysplasia. Its worth noting that they are one of the handful of dogs that can suffer from 'Rage Syndrome', this is a genetic mental condition that can cause the dog to suddenly attack aggressively, after the episode though the dog will have no idea what has happened, as during these 'rage attacks' as they black-out mentally. This is a rare condition and is mostly only found in show dog lines, it is thought that syndromes can be traced back to one dog, who won at the Westminster Kennel Club and went on to become a top sire. Studies have shown that 'Rage Syndrome' occurs most often in the darker solid colored Cocker Spaniels, this is thought to be purely because these are the dogs most commonly bred for the show ring, and not actually a direct link to the color itself.

Grooming. Cocker Spaniels need daily brushing to keep their coat in good conditions and to keep it from tangling, however, most pet dogs tend to have a shorter coat than show dogs and are often clipped shorter. If this is the case then you won't need to brush the dogs quite so often. They do mostly need to be regularly trimmed to keep their hair to the optimal length wanted.

Living Conditions. Cocker Spaniels will do well living almost anywhere, although giving them a good daily walk or run is required. They are an energetic dog and will happily accept all the exercise they can get, and then some more.

When a person is seeking to train an English Cocker Spaniel to hunt, it should begin as soon as the dog is old enough. The training needs to include the basic obedience commands as well as teaching the dog to retrieve, sit, stay, up and recall. The commands are necessary to make the dog into a good hunter and the English Cocker Spaniel is a natural bird dog. Without proper training, the hunter and dog might be putting themselves at risk. The training should be consistently done on a daily basis and using a firm, but gentle manner.

The puppy needs to learn how to obey and stay within the parameters of a gun. If the dog is flushing out of range, you will not be able to get many birds. Many training professionals use pigeons as a way to train the dog for knowing the proper gun range. With advanced training a dog will quickly learn the pattern of flushing and retrieval and stay within gun range. Once the dog has mastered using pigeons, the trainer will want to attempt some flushing exercises prior to opening day of the hunting season. This is done so that the dog will learn different bird scents other than just that of a pigeon.

The most important thing the puppy needs to learn is how to chase and come back if the birds fly out of the range of the gun. The first instinct the dog will have is to keep pursuing until it catches the birds or until he or she loses sight of them. In this instance, the trainer will need to train the dog using a recall whistle, though some trainers also incorporate the use of a shock collar to get the dog familiar with stopping and returning.

When introducing an English Cocker Spaniel to the gun, it is important to note that if the dog isn't warned properly he or she could become gun shy. You need to make sure gun training is done in steps, teach the dog that when the shot is heard it is time to retrieve. This takes considerable practice and is not something the dog will learn in a short time period. You need to consistently practice and take the dog out with you to get them used to the noise of birds, the sounds of gun shots, and to do a short chase and return exercise.

One method used by professional trainers is done using flushing, a short chase and then calling the dog back after you toss down a dead bird for the pup to find, retrieve and bring back. The idea of tossing out a dead bird during this situation is to get the dog used to seeing the reward of retrieving and bringing back the game. This is a crucial step that must be done to ensure proper gun training and bird hunting.

Young dogs that have trained still are not ready for an actual all-day hunting trip. It will take a couple of years of consistent work and training before the dog will be prepared for an all-day hunt. With time and dedication, the dog will learn to go for longer periods of time, do more chasing and retrieving. Bird hunting is an activity that an English Cocker Spaniel completely enjoys and by giving it time and adding a little more activity with each outing will build confidence, skill and endurance. If you have done the training correctly, your dog will learn to flush, chase, retrieve and return the birds you hunt with relative ease.

The traditional sport of hunting the "gamecock" is the foundation of the word "Cocker". The term "Cocker" denotes those spaniels which were used for hunting this bird. Many years ago hunting dogs were classified according to size. Those over 25 pounds were classified as Field Spaniels and those under 25 pounds were classified generally as Cocker Spaniels. Selective breeding of Spaniels and other hunting breeds in the nineteenth century began to distinguish and discriminate between the different types of Spaniels.

The Cocker spaniel was classified as a separate breed by the English Kennel club in 1892 and by 1946 in the United States two different "Cockers" were classified, the American Cocker spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel. The two breeds diverged in several ways. This breed is notably the dog which retains a strong hunting instinct. The muzzle of the English Cocker is longer with less stop than that of the American Cocker Spaniel. The body is square, in contrast to the American Cocker which presents a sloping back and exaggerated rear angulation.

The English cocker is essentially a hunting dog and the form reflects the function. The English Cocker's body should present well sprung ribs for endurance in the field and a steady gait which is balanced and not overly "flashy" as is the picture which is presented by the American Cocker Spaniel's exaggerated movement. The tail is docked and the tail set of the English Cocker is slightly lower than that of the American Cocker, another important distinction between the two breeds.

The coat is longer and this can present a difficulty in the field, regular grooming and some trimming is necessary for neatness. The Spaniel ear is always long and heavily feathered, the hairs on the ear being much longer than the ear leather itself. The long drooping ears of the typical Spaniel are said to act as a means of sweeping the scent forward towards the muzzle when the dog is hunting.

When hunting the English Cocker is a steady and reliable hunter, aggressive and thorough. Its small size allows it to get into the thickets and brambles with ease and scare up the birds. The movement of the cocker should be long and reaching, with incessant tail action. It is typically a flushing dog, although it can be useful also as a retriever.

Both Cockers have a merry disposition and happy character, however the English Cocker appears most often to have a more solid and stable disposition, less stubborn in nature and easily trained. This is a smart dog which is inquisitive by nature and should have no timidity.

The dog is an eager hunter and very trainable, a faithful dog who works for his master as a companion and partner in the field and prefers the human companionship to that of other dogs. The English Cocker does not make a good kennel dog, needing to be with people is part of its nature and it is a reliable and affectionate pet and strong and capable hunting companion.
