What Are the Differences Between a Doberman Pinscher and a Miniature Pinscher?

by Dogs.net on December 7, 2011

is there a way to tell while it's still a puppy?
I worded the question all wrong, I was wanting to know if the characteristics were different as puppies and adults, not the actual technical difference, I already knew that. lol Like can a min pin be as aggresive as a dobe? And is there a distinctive physical appearance that would separate the two as pups? Besides weight? Thanks though! Sorry!

Two completely different breeds that are not even related. How do you think you can tell the difference? A Doberman pup will weigh around 10 lbs. when it is 6 or so weeks old. A Min Pin will probably weigh around 2-3 lbs. Are you asking about a shelter pup or something? If this is a dog with no papers, just look at the size of the dog. BTW, there is no such thing as a Minaiture Doberman.

Add: Acacia Rott, just wanted to let you know that a Dobe is a medium sized breed, according to standards, not a large breed. Only telling you for educational purposes, that’s all.

Add #2: What do you mean about a Min Pin being as agressive as a Dobe? Any dog can be agressive if not trained and socialized proberly, no matter what the breed, mix, or size. I’ve had 8 Dobes over the past 25 years, that were raised with small children (they are now 27 &31 years old) and have never considered them to be “aggressive”, but they were protective, as I will also say that “any” dog can be.

They are two totally different breeds. They may look alike, but other than that, not the same. One is a small breed, toy breed, the other is a large breed working dog.

they are a completely different breed altogether.

Min Pins are actually related to terriers.. they were called min pins because they resembled smaller versions of the GERMAN Pinscher.. Min PIns were an established breed long before the doberman was created. They were bred for small prey, such as rats.

Dobermans were bred to be guard dogs. They are medium sized dogs.

There will be quite a size difference between the 2 of them as a puppy.. a puppy min-pin would be pretty small.

Uh, four legs and a head? That is about all that they have in common. Sort of like asking the difference between a Doberman and a Rottweiler as a puppy or adult dear – the differences are huge as they are nothing alike outside of basic canine structure and the very common b/t pattern on some (many Miniature Pinschers aren’t b/t). They are in no way kin, nothing like each other. Do you think Affenpinschers are akin to Dobermans as well? Temperament-wise a Doberman should not be ‘aggressive’ – neither should any dog but when bred ignorantly and/or reared improperly any dog can evidence aggressive behaviors.

I can only answer part…..I have seen some nasty, aggressive Min Pins. And have seen some well-behaved ones.

They are two completely different breeds that don’t look anything alike structurally even as puppies if you know what you are looking at. Neither breed should be aggressive if properly bred and socialized most especially not as a puppy
