Is It Okay to Socialize a Doberman Pinscher Only When They're Young?

by Dogs.net on November 22, 2011

I want to get a Doberman, but I can't socialize them all the time. Is it okay that I socialize them only until 1 year of age? I have a male Golden Retriever at home for the male Doberman I'm getting to interact with.

why would you socialize them only until one year of age? what exactly do you mean? dogs need to be socialized especially in their puppy years, but even well beyond that. the lab at home won’t be enough for your doberman. dogs need to be subjected to new people, places, animals, sounds, etc in order to prevent any hostile, people/animal aggressive behavior when they are older.

I have a pure breed Pitbull, i’ve been socializing him with other dogs, I don’t see a problem, he is still a puppy, and he likes to not let people in the front door, really cute.

If your not socializing your Doberman he will become dominate over your Golden. Goldens are known for their good natures. Dobermans not so much unless you socialize them a lot. They are bred to be guard dogs, so they sometimes can have aggression problems, depending upon the line you go with. They are also super intelligent so if you slack they will be running the household. I suggest you stick with your dear Golden or get another Golden.

I’m not sure what you are on about here. ‘Socialising’ means getting a puppy out and about, meeting people and other dogs etc. and used to all kinds of different things around the house too, like the vac., washing machine and so on – surely? By a year, a dog should be well socialised, as in used to most things.

Being ‘social’, ie getting together with other people – dogs, is slightly different. So ‘all the time’ would be a little strange? When your Doberman is 1 year, are you going to turn into hermits, not take him out at all, live on a deserted island?
