I was wondering how much one would cost to purchase, how young can they be purchased, are they good family dogs (wont attack friends or neighbors) and if there are special things you need to do to raise a doberman.

A good breeder will charge $800+ but you can rescue one for under $100. This breed commonly ends up in shelters.
How they act around people will depend on you. You will have to socialize your dog and invest time into his training daily. If you adopt an older dog with some training, this will be much easier for you.
They are good family dogs but you have to be very firm. You have to get the dog from a very good breeder. Backyard breeders can go from 300-600 dollars=, yea its cheap but not quality and you never know what health problems are there. Professional goes from 900- ??? but thats worth it. If they are not exercised properly they will go attack people and animals. They need 2-4 hours of exercise EVERYDAY. they should be purchased at 8 weeks, never younger. Definitly go to puppy kindergarden and socialize the dog to every thing you can think of: men, women children ducks chickens fish dogs cats etc. anything you dont want your dog to be aggressive or fearful about.
Depends where you live and the line that they come from. I’ve seen an ad locally for Dobbies at around $400, but I’ve also seen some online that go up to $2000. I’ve been kind of looking myself
They are great dogs, I grew up around them. They are not mean and are good family dogs. You will have to train them, socialize them (very important), and provide enough exercise. They have the tendency to become “Velcro”, as in it will not leave the owner’s side for nothing. They usually form a very strong bond with one owner, but that does not mean that they are not respectful and loving to other members of the household.
I will consider getting one at some point in time, we got a little mutt at a shelter for now
. My only concern would be to check your home insurance, renter’s agreement. Some of them will specifically prohibit Dobermans, or increase your home owner’s insurance if you get one.
it all depends where you get the dog, dont go to a pet store, becuz some of the dogs there have bad health. if you go to a shelter, you never know where the came from so it could be mean. your best bet is to go to a breeder and see how the parents act so you know how the puppy might act when it gets older. the shelter is the cheepest but you have to be careful about the dog you choose. when you go to the pet store or breeder they have to be 8 weeks old to be purchased. if you get a doberman pinscher as a puppy, if you raise it right then it will not be dangerous, but you must be careful if you go to a shelter becuz a lot of dogs at the shelter were abused and they may act dangerous becuz of how their past owner treated them.
hope i helped
I owned a Dobey for 8 years (sadly he passed away a few years ago from liver cancer)…bought him from a local breeder for $300 and he was gorgeous. Just make sure that the person you buy him/her from is a reputable breeder and not some inexperienced jerk or puppy mill runner. Dobey’s make super family pets….I have 3 children that were very young when we purchased ours….the older 2 were around 4 and 6 and then our youngest was born when our Dobey was about 4. He loved the kids, but was first a bit hesitant with our new baby. He eventually got used to her and loved her just the same. He was a very kind, protective and loving dog….not a bad bone in that boys body. We all miss him like crazy……I do recommend training for dogs however, our Dobey received no formal training and turned out still to be a wonderful dog.

Here is a very good educational site provided by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America. You can also check out their breeder referral list. I use to show and breed Dobes for 25 years. Yes, they are a great family dog if bred, raised, and trained correctly. A pet quality Dobe from a breeder who shows and does all genetic health testing will run approx. $1200.00-$1500.00, which will include a beautiful show ear crop. Since you are a first time owner, I suggest you either get a Red or Black, as the Fawns and Blues tend to have coat problems. Whatever you do stay AWAY from anyone who breeds ALBINOS! (Z factored dogs)
if you buy from a reputable puppymill more than what the pups worth…if you buy one buy one from your local paper…put a ad in there you will get a healthy one that way…
A pet quality Doberman from a responsible breeder are typically $800-1500 or more. A responsible breeder (in countries where it is legal) will crop the ears before the puppy goes to its new home and the stitches will be out and the edges healed. Since cropping isn’t done until at least 7 weeks old the puppies are typically closer to 9-12 week old before they are placed. They are a good family dog if from a responsible breeder that breeds for proper temperament and properly trained. If they have proper breed temperament they aren’t going to be all over strangers but should accept anyone you invite into your home. Other than the supplies needed for posting the ears you don’t need anything special for a Doberman you wouldn’t need for any other breed
