Has Anyone Had a Bad Experience With a Doberman Pinscher?

by Dogs.net on August 29, 2011

My wife keeps telling the doberman pinschers are not friendly dogs because of one of her experiences at a animal shelter that she volunteered at. I have never been near one in person so I really don't know. Has anyone else had a bad experience either your own dog or someone elses?

Never…At one time the doberman was the considered the pitbull when they were extremely popular

No, I’ve known a few people with Dobermans, and they are great dogs when trained and socialized well.

A Doberman growled at my dog.

We were at the vet, and my Golden Retriever mix thinks “everyone always wants to be friends!” so she went up to the Dobe and wagged her tail. The poor Doberman was stressed, I could tell, and growled. Missy backed off. That’s the closest thing to a negative experience I’ve had, and it’s perfectly explainable.

I’ve been around 3 dobies in my life. one old red one… he was mean. 1 younger black one… also a little unfriendly and 1 brown… wouldn’t want to be in an empty room with her. I wouldn’t own one ever.. and I am a huge dog lover.

the bad stuff i hear is from UNTRAINED ones! i know several, and they are really cute wiht how playful and goofy they can get! They play well with many other dogs.

Just like any other dog, Some can be made to be mean,The ones I have known have been goofy and sweet. But they can run fast… They probably look more viscious than they are.
The little “micro” ones are kind of uppity, tho…

I have never in my life met a Doberman that wasn’t a great dog. You can’t blame a Doberman or any dog for something they might do in the shelter.. Look at the position they are in.. Imprisoned… Badly bred Dobermans are likely a different story, dogs bred by bybers and puppymills.. Those people that breed them to the dog down the street and sell them for $50- a couple hundred dollars.. Probably horrible temperaments.. A well bred Doberman, bred by a reputable breeder and you can’t go wrong.

Nope….an ex-boyfriend of mines family used to breed them. I was around them for 4 years and they are fabulous dogs. The one at the animal shelter had probably been abused and had issues created by a human. Don’t buy into the hype that certain breeds have “vicious genes”. It is complete and utter nonsense. It isn’t born that way. A vicious dog is created only after it has been born and learns to be that way from a cruel human.

a doberman attacked my mate and ripped his back open

Any doberman I have met has been incredibly sweet and gentle. I think it depends on the individual dog, any dog can be aggressive or nice and it doesn’t depend on the breed.

When I was little, my family had 3 Dobes at a time. The only one I can remember though, was Angie. We basically grew up together. She was SO sweet. Gentle and everything. Some people were afraid of her, because of their rep. but she was great. But then some place took her away for some BS reason, and she just ended up getting sick with them and looking starved! That’s the only bad experience. BS “animal city, or rescue places” or whatever, something like that, taking my beloved dog away! If I were old enough to know exactly what was going on at the time, I would have done a sh*tload more to get her back. Of course I was only about 8, if that… So there wasn’t much I could do.

Anyway! I have not had a bad experience with a Doberman Pinscher. The ones I’ve met, mine included, have been wonderful.

Neighbour up the street bred show dog Dobermans I’m walking up the sidewalk and I see three six month old Dobie puppies sitting on the couch with their chins resting on the back and staring out the window. As I approach they kind of glanced sideways at each other and the more assertive one raised his head up half an inch off the back of the couch and went “woof” really softly. It was the most laziest woof I have ever heard! Worst guard dogs ever! They didn’t even move! They just stared balefully at me. So no, I haven’t had a bad experience with a Dobe. If I ever wanted one I would carefully choose my breeder. There are a lot of good Dobe clubs and one of them could direct you to a trustworthy dog!

I can honestly say I have never had a bad encounter with a Doberman Pinscher. In fact, all the Dobies I have met in person have been friendly, frisky dogs.

I was bitten by one when I was a young girl – totally unprovoked – and I’ve always been wary of them since.

Dobermans can be some of the sweetest, most lovable dogs you will ever have the honor of owning.

They were bred for protection dogs in the beginning, not guard dogs. Guard dogs, ie Great Dane, will bark and alert you if something is suspicious. A Doberman will fight to the death to protect you if there is real danger.

They need to be trained properly. They are GREAT family dogs, are good around children and are known as Velcro Dogs, because they love their owners so much they want to be with you constantly. So they do require a lot of attention.

The Doberman at the animal shelter had probably been abused or neglected. There’s no way to know what that poor dog had been through.

We recently adopted a female Doberman whose owners were going to put her to sleep because she was afraid of storms and would bark and pace around. Really good people? She is so sweet and would not give her up for anything.

They are great dogs and I would recommend them to anyone who will take the time to train them and gain knowledge about the breed.

Good luck

There is a doberman around were I live that lunges at you if you walk past and the owner doesn’t do anything but that’s not because of its breed its the owner and bad training ( I think the owner likes when it lunges I think they think it looks impressive or something). All the dobes I have had and herd about have been great.
