Can Doberman Pinscher Get Along Well With a Min Pinscher?

by Dogs.net on December 3, 2011

I will be moving into a house soon and have always wanted a min pin, my fiance wants to get a doberman as well. Do they live well together? Any training tips?

Thanks!

As long as they’re both good with other dogs, they’ll be fine.
I know min pins are prone to aggression, with people and other dogs, and dobermans are prone to dog aggression and a high prey drive, espcially if not socialized well.
My suggestion would be to adopt two adults, that are at least 2-3 years old, or at least an adult doberman to insure that they won’t develop dog aggression when they reach sexual maturity.
Fair warning, I don’t know much about min pins (half I’ve known have been really sweet, and half pure evil), but dobermans are extremely smart dogs, smarter than a lot of people I know, and they also have high energy needs. They are protective, but socialization and training keeps that under control (with an adult, you’ll know what you’re getting into), but they need continued training and stimulation (things to do) their whole life, or they’ll get bored, and a bored dog is never a good dog.
They’re also known as being “velcro dogs”, which means that they want to be with you as much as possible, and are happiest when they’re touching you. They do not do well when left in a yard or chained, they need to be with their people.
They’re amazing dogs for the right owners.
I would do a lot of research, and possibly foster a doberman for a rescue to see if one matches your lifestyle before getting one.

Bad idea. The size difference is too great. If they happen to get into even a minor fight, the min pin is dead. Heck, even playing the min pin could end up dead. The only way it would work is to keep them apart all the time and that is a lot of work.
Also, a min pin breeder would never sell you a pup if they knew you had or planned to get a Doberman.

YES!!!!!!!!! we breed Dobermans AND min pins!!!

They will be ABOSOLUTLY fine! For training, just the basics, and find a dog trainer. Mine have lived together since I was born, and no problem. Just watch out becuase minis love to run, but dobermans are great if your raise them that way. But just watch over them all and you’ll be fine! Also, Lots of space! They are both an energetic breed.
