Lassie, the popular series on television has made the Collie a recognizable breed to many. The Collie is noted for it’s intelligence and deep affection for the family.

Appearance – The Collie descended from dogs used for herding and this trait is still strong in them. The Collie is a wonderful dog for the household as they have innate desire to safeguard. Some dogs of this breed can be anxious due to its ancestry, however, most are usually hardworking and smart. The Collie is a member of the AKC Herding Group. The Collie can be as high as 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh in at 55 to 80 pounds.

The Collie is an energetic breed and is known for its perseverance. The Collie has beautifully shaped almond eyes and they reflect their perceptiveness. The eyes can be brown or blue. The Collie can either have a smooth coat or a rough coat, and the rough Collies have a fuller coat. They come in sable and white, tricolor and blue merle markings.

Characteristics – These dogs are not good with apartments since they love to spend most of their time outside. A family that is outgoing and energetic, and in the possession of a relatively big back yard would be the ideal situation for a Collie. The breed is sociable and extroverted but still make excellent watchdogs and protectors. They will sound an alert if there are strange humans or creatures. The do bite gently or nip at heels of the young kids to prevent the children from straying in the wrong direction.

Puppies of this breed are extremely smart and can prove to be a handful as they can be stubborn and get into trouble. Puppy obedience classes work well for them and they learn to socialize at an early age. You will need to demonstrate who is in charge and show the Collie what can be allowed and what is prohibited.

Health Problems and Grooming Issues – There are a few issues associated with the Collie. They can suffer from eye problems or PRA. More likely is the possibility of taking your puppy or dog to the vet for jumping from a moving vehicle or exploring his surroundings than for a health problem.

They like to eat, so ensure that the dog does not put on too much weight or there could be medical issues because of obesity. They enjoy three small meals a day.

Although it has long hair, it does not need as much grooming as one might think. In any case, the Collie’s coat must be groomed very often to reduce tangles. The Collie is alert and perceptive, ideal for protecting your household and can bring you much joy for years to come.

Dixie destroys a Giant Pumpkin. A couple of weeks ago my brother MattB needed me to baby sit his dogs (Dixie and Koko) for the day. Dixie is a border collie who always seems to find a task. She must have something to do all the time… They spent the day in our shop where we build wind turbines. Our good freind Zubbly grows Giant Pumpkins and he sent some seeds last year. Heather (my Mom) planted those last spring and gave my daughter Maya the largest pumpkin of the lot. It sat around here in the shop for a couple months and then.. when we had Dixie and she seemed kinda bored we decided to let her take out her anxieties on the giant pumpkin. Over the course of about 10 min she totally destroyed an 80 pound pumpkin. In this video we’ve compressed about 7 of those min. into about 3. Adam Brandon filmed this, check out adambrandon.com. He was up working with us on a DVD were making that shows how we build wind turbines. Too much fun!!!! Anyhow… sometimes otherpower.com spends its time building windmills.. sometimes it spends its time playing with the dogs. Watching dogs is usually better than watching television. One months worth of dog food costs about as much as your average cable connection.

The Collie belongs in the Herding Group of the A.K.C. There are two varieties, the Smooth coat and the “Rough”. The Collie was always a favorite “farm dog” in the United States way before the advent of television and when “Lassie Come Home” became a film and later a TV series, its popularity soared even more.

The movie emphasized the Collie’s homing instincts and it is true that this breed is the type of dog that bonds to its master. It is not the sort of dog that one can “re- home” at an older age and unless fenced it will escape and try to go back to its original home.

All varieties of Collies come from Scotland. There used to be a great similarity between the Border Collie and the Rough Collie but through the years of its historical development the rough collie has become a larger, more elegant breed and there are definite distinctions between the two breeds.

The Collie is a larger sized dog, standing about 22 – 24 inches at the withers, but not as heavy boned as many of the breeds that are this size. The coat in the Rough Collie is extremely profuse and long, having a large ruff around the neck and extending down the front and long feathers on the legs, belly and tail.

Far too many owners fall in love with this breed and purchase a Collie without undertaking the matter of coat care. It is imperative that this dog be brushed on a regular basis as the Collie has a dense undercoat which will easily mat. If the matted undercoat is left in without being combed out this can create hot spots and sores which remain undiscovered beneath the thick matted coat.

Many owners need to be taught by the breeder to groom the dog correctly right down to the skin, for if they only comb the top surface these mats can go completely unrecognized. The head of the Collie is long and has a wedge shaped appearance, having no stop. This may led to a problem because breeders have placed much emphasis on the elongation of the muzzle and the narrowness of the head.

Collies have a problem called “collie eye anomaly” which seems to be more common than in years past. Some breeders have over emphasized the head and have bred for a refined skull with no “stop” whatsoever, which may have detrimentally affected the breed.

It is speculated that this problem may perhaps be due to the increasing emphasis on a narrower skull. Hopefully this is a condition which careful breeding can get under control. Other than that and the fact that they should be x-rayed for hip dysplasia the Collie is generally a healthy breed.

The Collie is considered to be a perfect child’s companion. There are few reports of Collies with poor disposition. They are a very affectionate breed, willing to work and easily trained. They love their families and treat the children as their charges, being naturally protective and instinctive in their guardianship.

The Border Collie is essentially a sheepdog. Obviously, sheep could be raised only in large tracts of uninhabited land where they could graze freely and thus did the border areas between Scotland and Northern England become prime sheep raising country as their topography suited the rearing and raising of sheep.

The herding of sheep in these vast hills of unfenced land required the shepherds to obtain the help of dogs and this is where the Border Collies came into their own. They are natural born herders and soon came to be recognized as outstanding sheepdogs.

They are “heading” or “gathering” herders and not what is known as “heelers”. That means that they run wide around a flock of sheep, gather them together and bring them back to his master, the shepherd. They do not snap at the heels of sheep.

One of the reasons why these dogs are so good at running is that they have indefatigable energy. They are workaholics and are at their best when they are “doing” something energetic. This could mean any activity requiring them to run around endlessly, be it herding or any of the other active occupations and dog sports at which they excel.

Their energy level is boundless and this could be a major problem for your average human being who usually find it tough, if not impossible, to run around with their pets as much as their pets would want them to do.

The problem is actually more acute than the mere fact of a Border Collie’s owner getting tired of running around with his pet. Herding instincts run in the blood of these dogs and they will attempt to herd anything that moves – dogs, cats, squirrels and, more worrisomely, children.

While we have said before that these collies do not snap at the heels of sheep but rather run around them, they have been known to get carried away with the chase and to nip at the heels of children when a scared kid has tried to run away from him. It is necessary therefore that a Border Collie’s owner train him to control himself, specially in the presence of children.

This is not at all difficult because, by any standard, the Border Collie is a very intelligent dog who is highly trainable. That is why they became so famous as sheepdogs in the first place. But the point is that the owner must make the time and the effort to train his dog properly and he will find that his pet will behave himself far more readily than other dogs.

The other worry regarding this hyperactive breed is that his herding instincts will lead him to run after anything that moves. Lawn mowers and vacuum cleaners are all very well since they cannot harm the dog but the Border Collie is also an inveterate car chaser.

This obviously can be dangerous and many a collie has lost his life in trying to herd a car that is getting away. It is difficult to stop this trait and one has just got to be careful about his running on to the street.

In recent years, the Border Collie is being seen more and more in television programs and in movies leading a lot of people to seek such a collie for a pet. If you are one such, you must ask yourself first whether you are a right fit as an owner of such a dog. This is no aspersion on you. It just makes sense to zero in on a pet dog which is in sync with your personality.

An ideal combination for a Border Collie is an owner who enjoys spending a lot of time with his collie. Not only does he enjoy his time with his dog, but his work schedule must permit him to be with his pet for fairly long periods. And, it won’t be a case of merely hanging around with your pet.

You must be able to make the commitment to exercise and train in some way every day. A person who is very active and who likes to jog and hike for fairly long periods is probably the best suited to take on the responsibility of a Border Collie. Because, essentially, these dogs require much more work constantly than other breeds.

So think carefully whether you are able to make commitments such as these to your Border Collie before you take the plunge to adopt a pet of this breed. You may just be falling short if you don’t have the temperament to keep up with this talented but tireless dog.

A smooth collie has shorter hair like that of a Labrador or Dalmatian. The hair is short and smooth with a thick undercoat. Rough collies have a long and flowing topcoat and a dense undercoat. You can keep your collie looking good, no matter what the variety, with regular brushing.

You’ll need a pin brush, a slicker brush, a comb, scissors and a spray bottle filled with a conditioner spray. You can buy a commercial conditioner spray, or make your own using 1 to 2 tablespoons of dog conditioner diluted with water. Make sure it is diluted well or the spray will make your Collie’s coat greasy.

Make sure to spray your dog’s hair thoroughly before you start to brush. Never brush a Collie’s coat dry because it will break their hair. If you have a rough collie, part the dog’s hair and brush from the roots out. The pin brush can be used if your dog is not shedding and is free of matting.

The slicker brush and comb are helpful for shedding dogs and for removing mats. If a mat cannot be brushed out of the Collie’s hair, you can cut it out. Collies most often have matted hair behind their ears, underneath the front legs and on their underbelly so make sure to check those areas carefully. For a smooth collie, a slicker brush will suffice for both the undercoat and outer coat.

You should brush your collie everyday during shedding seasons, and at least once a week when they are not shedding. Regular brushing is important to remove the dead hair. If left alone, the dead hair will cause hot spots on your dog’s skin.

Collies generally do not require all over trimming, but you might want to keep their feet trimmed. With a small pair of scissors, carefully trim the hair around each footpad.

This will keep your collie’s feet clean. While you are working with your collie’s feet, you can also trim the nails. This should be done every 1 to 2 weeks to keep the nails from getting too long.

If your collie is a puppy, you can train them to be used to a Dremel tool with a sandpaper attachment. Apply light pressure with the Dremel and grind down to just before the pink quick.

The alternative to using the Dremel is to use a standard dog nail trimmer. Before you clip the dog’s nails, find the pink quick and cut just before that point. Cutting into the quick will make the dog’s nail bleed. If this happens, styptic powder is helpful to have on hand to stop the bleeding.

Finally, remember to clean your Collie’s ears about once a week. You can purchase a canine ear cleaner at any pet store. Squirt the ear cleaner into your dog’s ear canal and then rub the base of the ear. This will help the ear cleaner coat the inside of the ear canal. You can use a cotton ball to remove the excess cleaner and then allow the ear canal to dry naturally.

The television series “Lassie” made Lassie the beloved symbol for Collies in America. Your new Collie puppy won’t measure up to the wonder dog, but you’ll most likely find him a wonderful family dog.

The Family Protector

The Collie was originally bred to herd sheep, and still has a strong protective instinct, which makes them an excellent choice for a family dog. The American Kennel Club classifies the Collie as part of the Herding Group. These dogs weigh 55 to 80 pounds and stand 22 to 26 inches tall.

The Collie is strong and graceful and has lots of endurance. This dog’s almond shaped eyes seem to sparkle with intelligence, whether they are brown or blue in color. The Collie’s ears — 3/4 erect with 1/4 folded — make its appearance both alert and appealing. The coat can be either rough or smooth. The rough coat is longer and fuller than the smooth coat. This breed can come in sable and white, tricolor (black, white and tan), or blue merle (tortoise shell) colors.

The Collie enjoys living in the midst of an active family. This breed is not a good choice for apartment living, since it’s a large dog and loves to spend time outside. A home with a big yard is ideal. Although the Collie is friendly and outgoing, this dog is protective of its family and takes its duties as a watchdog seriously. Your Collie will bark at intruders, whether they are people, cats, squirrels, or pieces of trash blowing around the yard.

Stubborn, But Trainable

The Collie can be quite headstrong and can get into a lot of mischief as a puppy. You should consider attending puppy obedience classes with your Collie, since it is easier to train a small puppy that hasn’t developed bad habits than a 60-pound dog that has. Also, be firm with your puppy about staying on the floor if you do not want Collie hair on all of your furniture. Once you allow your dog onto the furniture, he will feel that he has a right to be there any time you leave the room.

The Collie breed has few health problems. Eye diseases and PRA (a genetic defect leading to blindness) are the most common problems these dogs face.

A Good Eater

Collies can pack away a lot of food. These dogs have a tendency to overeat, so it is best to give them 3 small meals a day. If your Collie develops a bulge around his middle, talk to your veterinarian about switching to a food that promotes weight loss.

Although a rough coated Collie has long hair, the dog does not need extensive grooming. Brush through your dog’s coat several times a week to avoid mats, paying close attention to the hair around his face, behind his ears, and around his legs. A smooth coated Collie needs only occasional grooming.

If you want a medium-sized dog to protect your family and play with the kids, the Collie may just be the perfect pet for you.
