The Chinese Crested is a loving and affectionate little dog that needs to be kept indoors due to temperature sensitivity. She is fairly active indoors and just needs that occasional walk. She can tend to dig and climb but barks little. She needs special care with her teeth and hairless varieties need their skin moisturized. It can be very difficult to find puppies for sale.

*Good With Children? They love children and are generally very affectionate. They are a delicate breed so children need to be very careful not to injure them. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? They generally do well with other pets, especially if socialized with them early on.
*Temperament: This is a very loving and affectionate dog.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Chinese Crested is approximately 9 to 13 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and around 5 to 12 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chinese Crested is no exception. Be on the look out for skin allergies, patella luxation (congenital condition in which the kneecap dislocates), Legg-Perthes disease (hip joint disease, proabably genetic, affects hip joint and results in arthritis or inflamation and pain and lameness). The hairless variety appears to have more medical issues than the Powderpuffs (fully haired variety). The hairless will need sunscreen if exposed to much sun, plus they can have teeth problems and should not be given hard chew items like bones. Additionally, the hairless versions may have allergic reactions to wool and lanolin. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, one with hair on just the head, tail and feet and the other completely covered in hair called the Powderpuff. The Powderpuff has a double soft and silky coat which can tangle easily. She needs to be groomed daily to help keep her from matting. The hairless needs bathing frequently and oils rubbed into her skin, but avoid lanolin or products containing lanolin. They do not shed much and may be a good choice for allergy sufferers.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
*Life Span. The Chinese Crested can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*History of Chinese Crested. They were developed in thirteenth century China through mixing the Chihuahua and Mexican Hairless Dog. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1991

Some Registries:
*American Chinese Crested Club
*UKC United Kennel Club
*NKC National Kennel Club
*CKC Continental Kennel Club
*APRI Americas Pet Registry Inc.
*AKC American Kennel Club
*FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale
*NZKC New Zealand Kennel Club
*KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain
*ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club
*ACR = American Canine Registry

Litter Size: 2 to 4 Chinese Crested puppies

Category: Toy

Terms To Describe: Loving, playful, entertaining, friendly, fine boned, graceful, elegant, loving, gay, alert

The Chinese Crested was carried by sailors from Africa to China and nearly every other port of call. Fanciers are found everywhere; however the breed has never reached great popularity. It has been exhibited in circuses and carnivals as a freak. This little dog has many qualities that go unrecognized.

The Chinese Crested is seen in two types. One is the hairless type and the other is called the Powderpuff type with a full coat. The Powderpuff type is nearly identical to the hairless except for the coat. The two are interbred and shown together.

The Powderpuff's coat care is probably less demanding than the skin care of the hairless type. The Powderpuff is covered entirely with long, soft hair (referred to as a "veil"). You will need only to brush and comb occasionally and bath when dirty to keep the Powderpuff looking "spiffy."

The hairless type requires moisturizing creams applied daily, sunblock for the light-skinned dogs and a coat is needed in cool weather. The hairless type is prone to blackheads and will need special shampoos to control this problem. The hairless type Chinese Crested has a crest of hair on its head, extending partway down the neck. There are socks covering its toes, as well as a plume on the tail. The rest of the body is hairless.

The Chinese Crested is an active and unique household companion. He will follow his owners around the house, play games with the children and join in family activities. He is a superior family pet. He also can serve as an adequate alarm dog. The Chinese Crested is a good choice for an older child's playmate.

You will need a good-quality bristle brush and a safety razor (to shave the face) for the Hairless variety. For the Powderpuff purchase a good-quality bristle brush, a wide-toothed comb and clippers for the coat.

The skin of the Hairless type requires frequent moisturizing. You can use baby oil or Nivea face cream to massage into the hairless parts to keep the skin smooth and nicely moisturized.

Grooming procedure for the Hairless:

Keep the Hairless type clean with frequent baths, and us a good shampoo followed by a moisturizer (you can also use baby lotion to moisturize the skin of the Hairless Chinese Crested.

The crest, socks and plume should be blow-dried with a good bristle brush.

When hair appears on the body of the Hairless type, you need to remove it.

Remove the facial hair with a safety razor or an Oster No. 40 blade against the grain. You can also be used to remove body hair. Be careful when using a razor to remove the hair from a Chinese Crested. If you are at all apprehensive about using a razor, consult a professional groomer.

Large patches of hair on the Hairless Chinese Crested are classed as a fault in the show ring.

Towel-dry and finish with a hair dryer on the crest, socks and plume. Brush these areas very carefully with a bristle brush. Avoid brushing on the skin areas.

Grooming procedure for the Powderpuff:

You will need to brush the Powderpuff coat frequently with a bristle or pin brush.

Daily brushing may be necessary as the Chinese Crested puppy coat changes to the adult coat.

Mats should be teased out with thumb and forefinger.

When all mats are removed work through the coat with a bristle or pin brush.

Tangles and mats may be found in the area between the front legs and the inside of the elbows. Teach your Chinese Crested to lie on its side while you remove these mats.

To keep the coat of the Powderpuff Chinese Crested looking nice bath regularly with a good-quality dog shampoo. Follow the bath with a blow-drying.

Brush the coat of a Powderpuff Chinese Crested in layers with the lie of the coat. If you use a pin brush be extra careful not to cause the dog discomfort.

After bathing, brushing and blow-drying, the face can be shaved using clippers (10 mm blade). Take a line from the outer corner of the eye to the ear and in a gentle curve from the ear down to the "Adam's apple." In the U.S., however, the Powderpuff face is not shaved.

Check between the pads of the feet for felting and remove to prevent discomfort to the Powderpuff Chinese Crested when walking.

Finish off with a wide-toothed comb if desired. This will find any remaining tangles in the coat.

Check the Powderpuff Chinese Crested' nails, ears and teeth. The nails should be moderately long.

to begin with here are some other names the Chinese Crested is known as are:

Chinese Edible Dog

Chinese Ship Dog

Chinese Hairless

Chinese Royal Hairless

Pyramid or Giza Hairless

South African Hairless

Turkish Hairless

The "crest" in its name refers to a copious shock of silky hair that graces the dog's head.

The Chinese Crested is found everywhere, but has never reached great popularity. It has often been exhibited in circuses and carnivals as a "freak." However, this little dog has many assets that go unrecognized.

There are two types of the Chinese Crested:

Hairless

With a full coat, which is called the Powderpuff

The Powderpuff is just about identical to the hairless except for the coat. The two are interbred and shown together. If you breed a hairless to a hairless or a Powderpuff to a hairless you can end up with either type or both types of puppies. Breeding a Powderpuff to a Powderpuff will always produce the Powderpuff type puppies.

Some authors claim the origin of the Chinese Crested is Africa. Others find its origin in Mexico or any of several other warm countries. The Chinese Crested is known to have been carried by trading ships from and to many different ports where it was bought and sold. Therefore, its origin is shrouded by sea tales.

The date of origin of the Chinese Crested is considered to be during the thirteenth century. Oriental countries concentrated on breeding miniaturized dogs, so the Chinese Crested ancestors probably include some of these small, hairless mutations.

The Chinese Crested originally enjoyed a pampered life with few duties except those associated with being a good companion. Very early in the development of the Chinese Crested breed it was probably used as a ratter on trading ships and was even sometimes eaten by human residents of these trading ships (how horribly awful to think of eating such a beautiful creature).

Personality

The Chinese Crested is said to be "a nimble and cunning playmate." He is a vigilant and sensitive house dog. The Chinese Crested is a loving and obedient pet. He socializes well with other pets and is only a little cautious of strangers. The Chinese Crested is lively and active, but is rarely seen in agility contests. He is easily trained and should do well in obedience work.

Appearance

The Chinese Crested is fine-boned and graceful. He stands about 11 to 13 inches tall and weighs 5 to 12 pounds. He is athletic-looking and well muscled. The legs of a Chinese Crested are straight and strong. The Chinese Crested has a copious shock of silky hair that graces his head. Hair is absent over much of the remainder of its body except for tufts of hair on the tail and feet.

The Powderpuff has a flowing double coat of silky hair that covers its entire body. It is seen in any coat color or combination of colors.

Exercise Requirements

As with most toy breeds the Chinese Crested needs a minimal amount of exercise which can be obtained in your backyard.

Grooming

The Chinese Crested needs to be kept clean with frequent baths using a good shampoo followed by a moisturizer like baby oil or baby lotion. This routine is especially true for the hairless type.

The Powderpuff requires regular brushing and combing. The teeth need cleaning regularly.

You will need a good-quality bristle brush and a safety razor (to shave the face) for the Hairless variety. For the Powderpuff coat you will need a good-quality bristle brush, a wide-toothed comb and clippers.

The skin of the Hairless type responds well to frequent oiling by massaging baby oil or Nivea face cream into the hairless parts. This helps to keep the skin on the Chinese Crested Hairless type smooth and nicely moisturized.

The Powderpuff puppy requires frequent brushing with a bristle or pin brush particularly when the puppy coat changes to the adult coat, at which time daily grooming may be needed. The coat of a Powderpuff Chinese Crested should be brushed in layers with the lie of the coat.

After bathing, grooming and blow-drying, the face should be shaved using clippers (10 mm blade). Take a line from the outer corner of the eye to the ear and in a gentle curve from the ear down to the "Adam's apple." This cut is similar to the face of a Poodle. In the U.S. the Powderpuff face is not shaved. Finish off the entire body with a wide-toothed comb if desired. The comb will find any remaining tangles in the coat. Of note in the Chinese Crested is that the dog's nails should be moderately long.
