UPDATE 9/6/07: Smokey has been adopted! He is a three year old male who was badly neglected by his previous owner and was treated for Lyme disease. Until he was surrendered to rescue he had never seen a vet. He had never ridden in a car or even used stairs. We are fairly certain these photos show the first time he played with a ball. Smokey spent the first 3 years of his life living in a 4ft by 8ft kennel run with a dirt floor. A corner of the run was his bathroom and waste accumulated to a depth of two feet in that corner. His only exercise was digging a hole in the other corner. Smokey is living in a foster home in upstate New York. He will be brought back to health and offered for adoption later this fall. Can you chip in to help dogs like Smokey? www.cbrrescue.org Smokey's adoption page is located here: www.cbrrescue.org

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Have A Unique Story In The History Of Dogs

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are thought by many to be the ultimate waterfowl dogs. Their toughness, intelligence, and huge capacity to work long hours in extreme conditions is legendary. When did the breed begin and how was it developed?

The Chessies origins go back to 1807. It was in that year that the crew from a British ship was rescued as the ship sank in the Chesapeake Bay. Among the rescued were two Newfoundland puppies. George Law, who served on the rescue ship, the Canton, bought the puppies from the British ships captain. The male was named Sailor and the female called Canton. Because Laws was returning to sea, he gave the puppies away to two different owners. Eventually, both animals ended up with owners who were heavily involved in waterfowl hunting.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were developed from these two Newfoundlands. Other breeds that contributed to the Chesapeake were English Otter Hounds, Flat Coated Retrievers, Curly Coated Retrievers and the local coonhounds. The breeding was not as tightly controlled and documented as is today. It's unclear if Sailor and Canton were ever bred with each other. Even if they weren't, some of their offspring certainly were.

The primary qualities that were bred for in the early days were aimed at function, not appearance. The most important of these qualities were the ability to work in freezing, often icy, water and the ability to retrieve. Besides these two qualities, the animals had to have a great deal of endurance and the desire to work.

Some of the owners of the new Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were commercial hunters. At the time that Chessies were being developed, enormous flocks of birds were common. There could be thousands of birds in a flock. Since there weren't hunting limits placed on the hunters, they would often shoot hundreds of birds a day. All of the dead and wounded birds had to be pulled from the icy waters where they fell. This was exhausting work but the Chesapeake proved to be up to the task.

When the giant flocks of ducks and geese began to disappear, the breeding requirements changed. Breeding was no longer solely focused on function. Appearance became a bigger factor. In fact, at one time there seemed to be a split in the breed. Some breeders were breeding for appearance and the show arena. Others didn't seem to really care what the dogs looked like. To them, all that mattered was how it performed in the field. Fortunately, these two different outlooks have merged. The physical appearance and other physical attributes became increasingly standardized over the years. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1878.

The reputation of the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers began to spread beyond the Mid-Atlantic States. Besides both coasts, other areas, including the American West, began producing top quality animals. In 1918 the American Chesapeake Club was established. The goal of this organization is to promote the breed and to educate people about the breed.

With a strong 200 year history behind them, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are sure of a bright future.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is not an apartment dog. She needs plenty of room to exercise and having a body of water available for work and play is appreciated by her. She is a strong dog with a mind of her own so an experienced owner is a must. She likes children and enjoys hard play. She can get along with other pets with strong early socialization but she is territorial and wants to dominate.

*Good With Children? She generally gets along well with children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? She can get along with other pets, especially with early socialization. She tends to be territorial and will want to dominate.
*Trainability: She can be slow to train with a low learning rate.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Chesapeake Bay Retriever is 23 to 26 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 65 to 80 pounds. The female ranges from 21 to 24 inches to the withers and 55 to 70 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is no exception. Be on the look out for canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), Von Willebrands disease (a problem with blood clotting), skin problems and eye problems. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a thick, harsh, oily and short coat with a wooly, dense under coat. She should be bathed only when necessary as this will strip her protective oils from her coat. She should be brushed regularly and is an average shedder. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*Chesapeake Bay Retriever History. This breed was developed in the Cheasapeake Bay area around 1807 to hunt waterfowl under bad conditions. She is a champion duck retriever. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1878.

*NZKC New Zealand Kennel Club
*KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain

Litter Size: 7 to 8 Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppies

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is also referred to as the "Chessie". The Chessie is said to have been originally from the British. This breed is even better at retrieving than the Labrador Retriever because he is bigger and stronger. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has the ability to hunt in very bad weather conditions and is known to have the ability to break through ice for a tough retrieve. He also has the ability to catch ducks for hours on end in the icy, rough waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever can weighs anywhere between sixty and ninety pounds and is about twenty-one to twenty-six inches at the shoulder. He stands very majestically and powerfully due to his great size and strength and his medium-to-large bone structure. He has a "waterproof" double coat that tends to wave on shoulders, neck, back and loins, and can feel slightly oily compared to others in this breed mix. The coat at times can also have a slight musky odor. This breed is usually anywhere from a light to deep dark brown, a sedge color, which can be anywhere from a reddish yellow to a chestnut shade or a dull straw or faded tan color. There may also be spottings of white in his coat. The Chessie's hind legs are very strong and his toes are usually webbed, which gives him a great edge since Chesapeakes need to have superb swimming ability.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is commonly known for it happy attitudes and intelligence. This breed can also have a tendency to be affectionately protective, while possessing a quite good sense. Sometimes they express their happiness by barking and becoming vocal, which can be misjudged as a growl. Rest assured, they are happy. This breed is also known to "smile" when they are happy by showing their front teeth, which can alarm those that are not used to it and see it as a threat.

This breed is not overly aggressive, even with other dogs, however, they do seem to be naturally dominant. For this reason, it is important to begin obedience training early, so they know that they are not the leader. If they are not trained and socialized early, they may have dominance and training problems later down the road.

The Chessie tends to cling towards one specific member of the family and consider him as the master. This dog sees anyone else as either equal or subordinate, but there can only be one master. With strangers, the Chesapeake is different than other retrievers because he tends to be reserved and more aggressive. Other retrievers are usually friendlier with strangers. However, the Chessie also has a tendency to be territorial, so this could lead to his reservation with strangers.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a quick learner and very smart. When this breed knows what his trainer or owner expects from him and is trained that way, he will pretty much conform and behave that way from then on. He does not easily break the rules once they are learned.

This breed can be fed anywhere from one and a half to two and a half cans of a high-quality meaty product with a biscuit or, if they prefer they can have five cups of a dry dog food, complete with vitamins and minerals.
