I am not interested in English Bulldogs. By reading and viewing them, I have become quite partial to a French Bulldog. I know the word "best" is hard to define, but I am an active person, I love giving my dogs attention, and love a playful breed. I also don't mind a dog that barks when he is worried or hears a strange knock on the door, I actually appreciate that in a dog.

Best is your own “personal opinion”. It depends on what is best for you… And to find that out, it takes a lot of time, sitting on the computer, looking up and researching different dog breeds. And I can tell you now.. there are hundreds.
If you are active person, the French Bulldog would not at all be prepared for those daily jogs, games of fetch or any other “run around” activities you have in mind. They are one of the most *LAZIEST* bully breeds on the planet but perfect for those that want this in such a compact little dog.
A little more information would be ideal. From your current suggestion, you sound as if you are on the look out for a small dog, pretty much.. easy to maintain dog breed. I could be wrong however. Have you owned a dog before? The Boxer is an excellent “bully looking breed” but then again, restricted to owners who have the knowledge and experience of owning a previous dog.
The Alpha Blue Bulldog is an great breed that I think you should really look into. http://www.dkimages.com/discover/Home/Animals/Mammals/Carnivores/Families/Dogs-and-Relatives/Domestic-Dog/Livestock-and-Guard-Dogs/Alapaha-Blue-Blood-Bulldog/Alapaha-Blue-Blood-Bulld-5.html They are quite active and easy to maintain. Though being a rare breed means you need to be careful when it comes to purchasing one. Good Luck with the hunt. Keep in mind the Bull Terrier as well.
