Traditionally bred for baiting and attacking bulls, the English Bulldog has gotten a bad reputation as an all-around aggressive dog. Nothing could be further from the truth! This breed of dog is actually very friendly, sociable, and intelligent. Bulldogs can be wonderful with children, adults, and other animals so long as the proper training is provided.

English Bulldogs are fantastic with children. When first allowing your children to meet a new bulldog (or any breed, for that matter), make the introduction in steps and always have adult supervision, particularly with younger children. Your new pet should never be left alone with a child for any period of time without proper adult supervision. That said, the English Bulldog breed is notorious for being respectful of and patient with kids. They’d love to romp around in your yard or take long jogs with your children, but you must be careful to keep your bulldog adequately hydrated and monitor for signs of sunstroke, which this breed is prone to.

The English Bulldog is a very adaptable and loyal breed and will likely become a member of your family in a matter of hours. It is very easy to bond with a bulldog and your children will begin developing a relationship with your new pet almost immediately.

Bulldogs, due to their gentle nature, make terribly inadequate guard dogs. They are also not a very vocal breed unless they’re really trying to tell you something. However, their tough-looking exterior and legendary reputation as an aggressive breed can often present the image of a guard dog to potential intruders.

If you collect expensive shoes or vintage furniture, the English Bulldog may not be the breed for you. Bulldogs love to chew on everything and need to be provided with lots of chew toys to deter this negative behavior.

Many people think of these bulldogs as lazy. They are happy to lie about on a comfy pillow or on the hardwood floor most of the day or curl up on the bed with their owner to read a book or watch some television. An English Bulldog is not going to be your jogging partner, but he will be your best friend if you love to relax at home with a cuddly friend by your side.

Bulldogs, despite their intelligence, can be very difficult to train. They are a very stubborn breed and are not very active. A typical bulldog can get distracted or bored during a training session and will just want to lay down instead!

The primary drawback to owning these sweet little dogs is the prominence of health problems in the breed. The English Bulldog’s life span is usually at or under ten years. They are extremely susceptible to heat stroke, suffer from many respiratory and cardiac problems, and often develop arthritis.

Despite their chronic health problems, the English Bulldog makes an incredible and loving pet, perfect for a large family.

When choosing a dog, it’s important to choose the breed that’s right for you. In order to do that, you need to know the characteristics and temperament of the breed you’re thinking about adopting or purchasing before you do so. The English Bulldog is just one breed among many from which to choose.

History/Background: The English Bulldog descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff and was brought to Europe by nomads. It was bred for bull baiting in the early 13th century. The name “bulldog” (medieval in origin) refers to the robust look of a little bull and also the power with which this dog attacked bulls in arena combat before that practice was outlawed in the 19th century. The last of the working bulldogs in England were crossed with Pug dogs to create the English Bulldog. This breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1935.

Physical Characteristics: The English Bulldog has a short but wide, compact and muscular body with stocky legs and a short tail. The head is broad, with dense skin folds on the skull and forehead, and the cheeks extend to the sides of the eyes. The muzzle is short and sometimes dark, with a broad black nose and large nostrils. The upper lip is pendant and the lower jaw undershot. The eyes are very round, far apart and dark. The small, thin ears are folded back in the form of a rose. The coat is short and smooth, and the color can be red, fawn, brindle, pale yellow, washed-out red, white or any combination of these colors. The English Bulldog’s height is about 12 to 16 inches, and weight is 49 to 55 pounds.

Personality/Temperament: The English Bulldog, in contrast to its aggressive and fighting ancestors, is gentle and very affectionate. It typically does not beg for attention but seeks for it, and lots of human attention is required for its happiness. It is content to lie peacefully at its owner’s feet or just to be in the same room with its owner. It is sensitive to its owner’s moods. This breed makes a good companion and is good with children and the elderly and also with family pets.

Although known for its courage and excellent guarding abilities, an English Bulldog does not necessarily make a good watch dog. It usually only barks when there is really a reason or sometimes if furniture has been moved or there is something new in the house. This breed of dog can be bullheaded and determined and does not give up easily. It can be dominating and needs an owner who displays strong leadership.

A young English Bulldog will be full of energy but will slow down as it gets older. Although it appears lazy, this is not really the case. It doesn’t jump at every command but evaluates the command against its own priority setting to decide whether to obey the command and with what urgency. This breed snores very loudly and tends to slobber and drool. It rarely whines or complains.

Possible Health Conditions: Some of the health conditions that plague this breed of dog include breathing problems, poor eyesight, susceptibility to heat stroke in warm weather or hot rooms or cars, sensitivity to cold, skin infections and hip and knee problems. This breed also has an active digestive system. Puppies are often delivered by cesarean section because of the broad head. The life expectancy for this breed averages 8 years.

Exercise/Grooming: English Bulldogs need daily short walks but are not tolerant of excessive exercise. Some adult bulldogs would rather not exercise while others are full of energy. Grooming is fairly easy and consists of combing or brushing with a firm bristle brush and bathing only when necessary. The face should be wiped with a damp cloth every day to clean inside the wrinkles. This breed is an average shedder.

Living Conditions: This breed of dog is good for apartment life, is inactive indoors and does okay without a yard. It chills easily in cold weather and has trouble cooling off in very hot weather. It should be kept indoors.

Summary: The English Bulldog needs lots of human attention and strong human leadership, is very good with children and the elderly, makes a good companion and is relatively easy to groom but doesn’t typically have a lot of energy and has a shorter life expectancy than most breeds. If you are looking for these characteristics and traits in a dog and are able to fulfill its needs, then perhaps an English Bulldog is the right breed for you.

Health Concerns Of The English Bulldog

Once again I want to stress that buying your puppy from a reputable English Bulldog puppy breeder is an important step to take to ensure you get a healthy pup. A good breeder will carefully plan each mating, breed from good quality stock and screen for hereditary disease.

English Bulldogs typically live up to 10 years of age – they do suffer from a wide range of health problems. Your Veterinarian and breeder are the best people to give you specific health care advice but here is a list of common health issues:

English Bulldogs are very sensitive to extreme temperatures – both hot and cold. A nice mild climate is best for a happy and comfortable Bully.

Keep a close on the weight of your English Bulldog. Overweight dogs are susceptible to a long list of health problems that fit and healthy dogs are not. Make sure you feed a good quality fresh diet and provide adequate exercise (English Bulldogs do not require too much exercise).

It’s also important to clean out the loose face folds on your dog’s face. Use a soap and water solution every day or so to avoid the build up of moisture which can lead to infection.

Depending on what you feed your English Bulldog puppy you may need to brush your puppy’s teeth every couple of weeks.

Their flat face and also soft palate causes many English Bulldogs to have breathing difficulties.

Other health problems can include – hip dysplasia, allergies, cherry eye, cataracts, senotic nares, inverted tail, shoulder luxation and there’s others….

One other thing! English Bulldogs are not good swimmers – be especially careful with your Bully around water.

Training

Lets be honest here, English Bulldogs are not one of the best obedience training students – but don’t be fooled, they are capable.

It’s important that you establish yourself as your English Bulldog puppy’s leader. Give him/her clear guidance, in a positive non violent manner. Be consistent in your training, use plenty of encouragement and always enthusiastically reward desired behavior.

Below are some training issues you and your English Bulldog puppy should practice together:

As soon as your puppy arrives home you need to begin teaching him/her proper household etiquette. This includes things like chew toy training (Bulldogs love to chew!), puppy house training, preventing food stealing and other basic tasks. Preventing problems before they arise is always a better alternative than trying to rectify established problem behaviors.

Crate training is a good way to supervise and confine your puppy – for your benefit and your puppy’s wellbeing. It is also a useful tool to use when housebreaking your English Bulldog puppy.

All of the basic obedience commands are easily learned by Bullys. They should be taught sit, stay, down, heel, come etc.. Your puppy will enjoy these training sessions and you will build a very strong connection with your dog during the training process.

Training your puppy to walk nicely on a loose leash is an important skill to master. English Bulldogs grow to be big powerful dogs, so it’s crucial to educate your puppy how to behave on the leash.

English Bulldogs can be a bit stubborn or some may say indifferent towards training but if you keep your training sessions short, intense and fun you’re sure to achieve pleasing results.

Descended from ancient Asian Mastiffs, the English Bulldog was developed in Great Britain by crossing the bulldog descendants of the Mastiffs with Pugs. The result is a small dog that is wide and compact with a large head that has an intimidating look with a lot of folds in the skin. English Bulldogs will average only 12 to 16 inches in height but weigh anywhere from 49 to 55 pounds. They only live an average of 8 years. The English Bulldog has a short and smooth coat that needs minimal grooming and are considered average shedders. Baths are only given when necessary.

English Bulldogs are mostly brindle or red and it tends to be a uniform color, but there are also coats of liver, tan, black and white. English Bulldogs have a short muzzle and the lower jaw extends past the upper jaw. Because of this jaw structure, English Bulldogs have a tight grip when clamping down on anything. English Bulldogs make good watchdogs, alerting its family to an approaching stranger by growling and barking, but will not attack. They make good family pets and enjoy being in the company of humans as well as other animals. They are generally gentle with children but can be dominating at times. For this reason, obedience training is a must, as well as an owner who is not afraid to act as the alpha of the pack, as English Bulldogs can be stubborn and difficult to train.

Younger English Bulldogs tend to be full of energy while older ones tend to slow down. It is important to exercise an English Bulldog at least once a day to discourage obesity – sometimes a difficult feat since some English Bulldogs are content to not move at all (though almost all English Bulldogs are relatively inactive indoors). This choice of inactivity also makes it important to not overfeed an English Bulldog. Whatever their preferred activity level,

English Bulldogs will do well in apartment living. Most English Bulldogs tend to drool, slobber and snore. This is due to their small windpipes, which also makes them prone to breathing problems. English Bulldogs do not handle heat well at all and are susceptible to heat stroke. They are also sensitive to cold, so English Bulldogs are best in temperate climates. English Bulldogs also are prone to flatulence, hip and knee problems and skin infections.
