A lot of people seriously don't know what an American Pit Bull Terrier is. Watch this video and you will understand the breed allot more. Most people that claim to own these dogs really don't. They own mixed bred dogs that are designed using the American Pit Bull Terrier. Allot of these crosses have American Bulldogs added in for size and strength and some even try adding Bullmastiffs! Both the American Bulldog and Bullmastiff are much larger and more powerful dogs then the American Pit Bull Terrier. That is one of the reasons they are used to produce the dog commonly seen today. Allot of these dogs end up in shelters. In reality, the true APBT is, in my opinion, one of the best dogs you can own, if you know how. Dogs are pack animals and you need to make sure you're the pack-leader without ever hitting or abusing your animals. You also need to make sure that you can handle a dominant breed. The true American Pit Bull Terrier is a small to medium sized dog that gets 15 - 21 inches at the shoulders and 22 - 65 pounds. Anything more then 70 pounds is obese and/or a mutt. The Bull Terrier is a muscular, strongly built dog. It has a well rounded body, and we see a strong back. The head is long and strong and oval shaped to look at. The forehead slopes downwards and joins the muzzle in an even sweeping action. The nose is black. The eyes are small, almond in shape and deep-set, these are dark in colour. Their ears are small, close together and thin. This breed has a muscular long neck, with sturdy shoulders. Their tail is low set, short and carried horizontally. They have a short, flat, dense and harsh to the touch, coat. Two colours are recognized. These are the white Bull Terrier and coloured Bull Terrier. The White Bull has colours on their head that are not to be seen anywhere on their body. The coloured Bull Terrier may have black brindle, black, brindle, red, fawn and tricolour with white markings.

History of the Bull Terrier: Bulldogs were crossed with Terriers in the 18th century, and become very popular. In the 1830s, combat between Bulldogs and bulls were the height of popularity, this fashion of fighting needed a more agile dog that was not available at the time. Breeders crossed the Bulldog with the old English terrier, adding Spanish pointer blood, resulting in the Bull. In 1860, the white coated variety was bred by a dog dealer called James Hinks. This variety soon became popular with the fashion conscious nobles of the time. This dog has been used as a furious ratter and watchdog. The miniature was developed to have the same qualities as the standard. This breed later went on to be recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1948.

Temperaments: The Bull Terrier dog breed is fun loving, active and can be clownish. This is a loyal polite and obedient dog, but becomes fearless and courageous to protect their owners. This dog requires firm consistent leadership with affection throw in to make this a happy family pet. The bull can be fond of grown-up children. It can be too energetic for smaller children. This breed requires exercise daily, firm but fair rules within the home and not to have a meek owner. Without clear leadership, this dog can become very possessive, joining in quarrels within the home or can become jealous. This breed needs a lot of structure, or they may become destructive. This breed, as a puppy, needs to be well socialised, or they can become extremely aggressive with other dogs. This breed is not recommended to live with other non-canine pets. And it's best to remember, this breed can be difficult to train.

Health issues: The Bull Terrier's are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps, skin and flea allergies, kidney failure, zinc deficiency heart defects and can gain weight easily so care has to be taken with quantities of food.

Grooming: The Bull Terrier breed is easy to keep clean and tidy, only occasionally needing a brushing. It is an average shedder, usually twice yearly.

Living conditions: If the Bull Terrier breed has sufficient exercise they can live happily in an apartment. They are fairly active indoors, and do require a small garden.

People might be wondering why there is such a name as "bull dog".

Originally, Great Britain and later, America were obsessed with bloody fights between bulls and dogs. The main function of the canine is to hang on to the bull's neck and worry the poor animal until it dies. Obviously, these dogs had developed great strength in their jaws.

Among the popular choices of dogs for this sport were the pit bulls. Back then, the selection of pit bulls was so varied that many showed a variety of characteristics that made the sport highly interesting. Later in the life of the sport though, the center of attraction switched towards the fight between pit bulls and not against the bulls themselves.

From these canines rooted most of the bull dog terriers that we know of today.

One of the significant bull dog terriers we have is the American Staffordshire Terrier who is of great interest since it possesses intriguing seemingly opposing characters.

They project strength and physically power but they are not vicious. In fact, this dog is very much associated with its relationship to its family, especially among children. The physical features it has are now only due to their basic nature and orientation during their bloody fights as fighting machines. But this does not negate the fact that they can sometimes show aggressiveness which may somehow work against them. Nevertheless, this can be set off with their loving nature and devotion to human family. Thus, it has a stable temperament which make them good pets and excellent watchdogs.

AmStaff terrier, as it is called by its shorter name suffers in reputation though since it is commonly associated with pit bulls. These dogs are known for their love for challnge and are therefore employed in illegal dog fighting.

Most of the problems root from irresponsible training. Sadly, there are too few AmStaff that are properly trained. And what's even depressing is that there are innumerable pit bulls that are continually ill-treated by sadistic owners.

We are often confused of what true pit bulls are. In fact, many contend that these dogs must not be called by that name since it elicits unwanted images of gory dog fights. While this breed is not yet officially recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association or the United Kennel Club, the legitimate name remains to be American Pit Bull Terrier.

While it is true that American Pit Bull Terrier is violent in nature, this doesn't imply that they are made purely for brutal stuffs. As we have earlier said, these dogs are only products of maltreatment and exploitive training (and inhumane) for self serving purposes. Otherwise, American Pit Bull Terriers can be very people loving.

These are also known for their being hardworking on which they excel from. They are also fond of excessive physical activities that would exhaust their power reserves. Thus, this breed is great for those who need company during athletic training. If you are the couch potato personality, please find another breed of dog that would suit your lifestyle.

To clear things off, American Pit Bull Terrier are not officially recognized not because of its ill reputation but mainly due to beliefs that it is not a purebred. One major standard for a dog to be distinguished as member of Kennel Clubs is that it should be purebred. Until more comprehensive findings on its origin are found, this dog will remain unfortunately tagged as "nasty".

This kind of dog is known for its aggressiveness to other dogs but as a pet they will be your companion. These dogs are well known for their intelligence and loyalty and are also very protective of their owners. Many people mistake them for staffies, which is short for Staffordshire terrier but this is not a staffie. An American pit bull terrier is a mix of two dogs, a terrier and bulldog. They are of their own kind and cannot and should not be referred to as staffies. I have seen the UKC shows and I have never seen a pit bull on it.

These are some things that the owner may want to know about pit bulls. They are classified as terriers by the kennel organizations, hence the full name, American Pit Bull Terrier. They are equally happy indoors or outdoors, although we tend to keep ours indoors the majority of the time because they love being around us. They are very social dogs and will go bonkers if you don't give them a lot of attention.

These are also short haired dogs with coats that are shiny and smooth although they do come in a great variety of colors. We currently have a female that is black with a white chest and nose and another that is the desired red nose variety that is red all over. He also has golden eyes and is one of the most beautiful pits I have ever seen.

American Pit Bull Terriers vary greatly in size as well. The dog that my son has is only around 45 pounds while his father was about 90 pounds. They range from thirty to over one hundred pounds depending on their lineage and are usually from 18 to 24 inches tall although I have seen some larger.

As with any dog they should be bathed on a regular basis to keep them clean and free of irritants. You should also brush them twice a month and rub them down with a towel or rag to shake off loose hair. Also be sure that they get plenty of exercise so that they will sleep well at night. If you are exercising them in public always keep them on a leash to avoid any accidents.

Due to their fierce loyalty and protectiveness it is best that you socialize the animals with as many people and other animals as possible when they are young. If you do this you will avoid the problems that many people have with them when they are older. I have had several and none of them have been aggressive. It is all in how you raise them.

So, you are looking to buy a dog, and, more specifically, a Bull Terrier. This is a great breed of dog but a little tricky to buy. There is so much you need to know when looking to buy this breed of dog, so here are some things to look for when buying a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

1. When buying a dog, especially this dog, you need to make sure that you ask to see the originals of the Pedigree papers. With this you should be able to check the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeder's documentation, which will include the Kennel and Prefix number. Also, make sure that this information is up to date.

You may not want to do this because you do not want to be a bother to the breeder; but, if they are a serious breeder they will expect you to ask for this information. If at any point they seem to be hesitant to give you this information you should begin to get suspicious about the pedigree of the dog.

The reason this information is important is because this breed of Bull Terriers have a breeding standard that has been established to ensure that certain characteristics that define the breed continue to be passed down.

2. Only buy a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a breeder who is registered to breed them. This is the best, and sometimes only, way to guarantee you are getting what you are paying for. There are hundreds of people who were looking to save a few bucks, bought this breed of Bull Terrier from someone who was not registered to breed them, and ended up with a completely different breed of dog.

If you buy from a registered breeder you do not only get the piece of mind that you are getting the real deal, but you also get the option of papers that will certify the dogs lineage. These papers are completely optional for you to take but it just further tells you that you are getting the right Bull Terrier.

3. When purchasing your pup you need to be on the lookout for defects. If you buy from a registered breeder you can be ensured that you are buying a dog that has a proven and traceable blood-line, but these dogs are still able to have defects. Most of the defects are visible in full grown dogs but a few of them can still be spotted when a dog is young.

If you follow these three tips to buying a Staffordshire Bull Terrier you will be on your way to owning the dog you have always wanted.
