For all of you Boykin lovers, here is a video of a typical daily run through our local pedestrian park with Otis, my Boykin Spaniel pup. He's Hollow Creek's Otis on the Go, for short! Even though I'm not a hunter, Otis sure is. During our daily walks in this vast arboretum, Otis usually tracks, finds--and devours--the dead vole, chipmunk, bat, squirrel, bird, frog--whatever!--that the hawks overlooked or dropped. Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing my little buddy stick with me through the trails, come when called, and run his big ol' heart out. If I don't see those hind paws flying in the air in front of me, it's not a good day. Boykins do need lots of daily exercise, but they'll pay you back with improved health--no lie. At 5 months old, Otis weighs 20 pounds.

The Boykin Spaniel is a dog that is considered to be a truly American breed developed in South Carolina, using stock from such breeds as the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Springer Spaniel, the Cocker Spaniel and the American Water Spaniel. The breed is indeed an "american invention" bred for a strange but specific purpose in the early 1900s.

The hunters of South Carolina hunted the swamplands of the Wateree river and due to the scarcity of roads in this wild country, the hunters liked to use a style of boat that could be taken apart and put into pieces in the back of the wagon or carted overland across stretches of wilderness. They needed a hunting and retrieving dog that was small enough to fit in this small boat, along with all the guns and other gear . The Boykin was developed to fit this purpose and later the dog also became popular as a dove hunter . The slogan of the American Boykin Spaniel Club is "the dog that doesn't rock the boat".

The Boykin Spaniel is pictured as the spaniel on the 1988 South Carolina duck stamp designed by Jim Killen, the famous wildlife artist. The Boykin appears to be very similar to the Field Spaniel. It is a small dog, 30-40 pounds, with an eager disposition and a strong instinct to hunt and to retrieve on both land and water. He is a good swimmer and is small enough to work through heavy underbrush easily. His coat is of medium length and can be wavy or flat, it is a single coat of a solid brown or liver. There may be a small white marking on the chest but white is not allowed anywhere else.

This Spaniel is quite intelligent and eager to please, making a good family pet and all around pleasant dog, small enough to be an urban dweller but because of his natural hunting inclination he of course needs plenty of exercise and preferably should be used as a hunting dog when possible. He is generally friendly to other dogs and good with children.

There are hunters who have a belief, often erroneous, that the hunting dog will not make a good indoor dog and this may be true of some of the larger more active hunting dogs, but the Boykin Spaniel is not only small enough to live comfortably as a "house pet" but is also very eager to please, affectionate and indeed needful of human companionship and will bond to family members of all ages.

The Boykin is generally healthy, although there needs to be special attention paid to the eyes if the dog is bred, for the "pop eye" can be a problem. Dogs with health clearances for hip and elbow dysplasia and eye clearances are the only ones that should be used for breeding. Also epilepsy is rare but can be a problem.

The Boykin Spaniel is a member of the F.S.S. (Foundation Stock Service) registry of the American Kennel Club, in other words, it is a breed which may be considered for admittance eventually into the A.K.C., but meanwhile the F.S.S. provides an avenue for accurate record keeping of the stud records of the breed.

Overview

The Boykin Spaniel is a fairly new breed that is rated very highly for its hunting capabilities, especially of the water fowl. This breed is especially popular amongst bird hunters in the southern part of the United States, and they also have their origin in South Carolina in the United States. The Boykin Spaniel is the elected representative dog of South Carolina.

Temperament

Although the Boykin Spaniel is a very passive dog, they are also very enjoyable and obedient. These dogs are clever and devoted companions. Their yellow eyes are their trademark, and they are known to stare with anticipation into your eyes. Boykin Spaniels are unbelievable swimmers, and they love to be in the water. Each Boykin Spaniel has a unique personality and distinctive ability in the field that is not matched by another dog. These dogs also have very fine noses and they are very eager when out in the field.

The Boykin Spaniel was bred to be a hunting dog, and their great sense of smell sometimes give them grounds to wander off when not on a lead. This is a working dog breed, and they require lots of exercise which includes long walks on a daily basis. The Boykin Spaniel is extremely energetic, and requires sufficient exercise and a job to do to get rid of their energy. If their owners are unable to keep them occupied, they will find ways to entertain themselves. This often leads to destructive behaviour, especially when they are bored.

Care

The coats of the Boykin Spaniel should be brushed frequently to avoid mats from forming. These dogs should only be bathed when it is really necessary, and their ears should also be checked daily to make sure they are dry and clean. This will in return avoid infections from occurring.

Training

The Boykin Spaniel will do enormously well in activities that was planned and also in obedience classes. This breed possesses a more calm character than other Spaniel breeds. Therefore the Boykin Spaniel will not do well with training methods that are cruel and unkind. They will however do very well in training that is positive, especially if it is conducted in a fair and consistent way.

Health problems

Boykin Spaniels do suffer from conditions such as eye problems, hip dysplasia and skin and heart problems.

Boykin Spaniel

History

The history of the Boykin Spaniel began with a brown Spaniel sort of dog. Alexander White found this dog outside of a church in Spartenburg, South Carolina during the early 20th century. He took it home and on to his friend Lemuel Boykin. This dog proved to be a good hunter. Boykin began to breed Dumpy with a Spaniel named Singo.

Hunters needed a smaller dog like Dumpy that could fit well in the small section-boats used to hunt in the swamp and Dumpy fit the bill. Northerners coming to Camden, South Carolina on vacation to hunt paid to use Boykin's dogs. It is speculated that these other breeds were involved in developing the Boykin Spaniels: Cocker Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Springer Spaniel, and the American Water Spaniel. The Boykin Spaniel was dubbed the dog that didn't rock the boat, due to its medium build.

In 1977, the Boykin Spaniel Society was formed; they started to keep a studbook in 1979. They closed their studbook in 1982. The United Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1985. The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America was incorporated in South Carolina in 1997.

General Looks

This breed is a small to medium size dog. The ears are long and sit high upon the head. The top of the head is flat and wide. It is round on the sides. The jaw is very long. The nose is a liver tint and wide. The eyes are brown or yellow and are set broadly.

Is This Your Breed?

This breed is for an active owner or family. The coat needs brushing each week. Bath the dog occasionally. It is good with kids.

Coat

The coat is waterproof. There is an outer and under coat. The outer coat can be slightly wavy or flat. It is of medium length. The undercoat is short and thick.

Color

The solid colors are chocolate, liver, and brown. The toes and chest can have a bit of white.

Locomotion

The gait is unforced and has good reach. The shoulders go back at an angle that promotes a good stride.

Personality

The usual Boykin Spaniel is energetic, friendly, smart, and trains easily. It likes to work. This breed flourishes with human friendship. It does fine with other dogs. It needs plenty of outdoor activity.  It likes attention. This breed will play with children in the pool. They are best suited to an abode with a fenced yard. But don't leave it off of the leash by itself as it may take off following a scent.
This breed may damage property, when its exercise requirement is not met.
