If I Get a Boston Terrier Do I HAVE to Crop It's Ears and Tail?

by Dogs.net on October 3, 2011

I believe that's only the meanest factor to complete to some dog. But, we are thinking about obtaining a Boston Terrier and that i realize that they get theri tails and ears popped.

I do not have to do this will i? possess a Boston Terrier/Jack Russell mix at this time and she or he looks as being a Boston with it's ears and tail in tact. She's cute the way in which she's.

No you don’t have to at all. It’s a personal choice. Personally I think puppies should be left they way they were meant to be!

jams February 11, 2008 at 3:04 pm

first off…they do NOT get their ears cropped.

secondly…most of the time, they are born without tails in the first place. (and tails are DOCKED not cropped)

There is no law saying you need to crop anything. I have english bulldog pups right now, and I didn’t cut their tails, I think its terrible mean. Its just thats the breed standard, Can’t be a show dog without it but no harm done.

boston terriers do not have their ears cropped or their tails docked….so no you don’t need to

isis February 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

there is NO law that says you have to. only shows require mutilation. doesn’t make a bit of difference for a loving pet.

saparage February 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

No you don’t. I am pretty sure that Boston’s are born with short tails though, not 100% though.

Tail docking needs to happen withing the first 5 days of life so you probably won’t be the one to make that decision anyway.

Nandina (Bunny Slipper Goddess) February 11, 2008 at 3:05 pm

No, you don’t “Have to”, but you need to make an agreement with the breeder beforehand, because tails are docked at 3-4 days old, and they will likely require a hefty deposit to make up for the chance that you’ll back out and they’ll have an undocked dog.

Of course you don’t have to crop his/her ear’s.
Only reason to do it is if you plan to show the dog, then for show purpose’s it would need to be cropped.

Love has nothing to do with cropped ear’s or tails in dogs.
Is your dog, your choice.

You dont necessarily have to…ask the vet, maybe.

I think it’s mean too, but its necessary for some dogs because they may have spinal problems because of it. I dont know about the years, I havent heard that one.

If the vet says that your dog may have problems, it’s probably best to do that. You probably wont have to though. Everything should be just fine.

Good luck!

No. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. I have a cocker spaniel that I never had docked.

Wozee February 11, 2008 at 3:07 pm

NO! definitely not!! we have a doberman who is uncropped and they are renowned for having one of the longest tails and it causes no problems!! i thinks its horrible to do it and if you don’t want to then it’s simple! don’t! it’s your puppy! :)

ayec101 February 11, 2008 at 3:07 pm

having the ears cropped is horrible and painful ive seen it done and i would never do it to my dogs. docking the tail i think should only be done on dogs that are gonna have a big powerful tail you dont want them to whack you with it hard, or walk by and knock things over, but on a boston, i wouldnt do it. when you see how they do these things, you think twice about inflicting this pain, just for LOOKS.

curtis w February 11, 2008 at 3:08 pm

no . boston terriers do not have ear crops of tail docks, even if they were supposed to, there is no law stating that you have to have cosmetic surgery done to any dog

Safierdrgn February 11, 2008 at 3:09 pm

No you do not have to crop its ears or dock its tail. It is purely cosmetic and while the breed standard in the US may call for it..it is only if you want to show your dog.

Some people like the look, some people think it’s cruel. Personal preference.

Anora February 11, 2008 at 3:10 pm

tails will be done by the breeder at 3 days old….ears you would have done later , or not , if you didnt want. No rule says you gotta, the akc standard addresses both natural and cropped in the standard, and states both are acceptable.
Hope this helps,

EDIT: thumbs down? sheesh you ppl suck, the OP asked a question and I gave a FACTUAL answer..instead of an emotional inflammatory response like some of you!!!

DogDaze February 11, 2008 at 3:13 pm

If you are getting a dog in the USA and it’s standard calls for tail docking you will find it hard to get one from a reputable breeder that hasn’t already been done. Tail docking is done by 3 days after birth and no later, and since no breeder can tell a show prospect at that young of age the tails will be docked, no exceptions. As for ear cropping, I’m fairly certain that can be left up to you.

As for laws, nobody is getting arrested for either doing it or not as no law exists for this in the USA. Are you certain it’s a Boston Terrier you’re getting?

Thumbs down for an answer containing no personal opinion and only facts…amazing!

luvz_dogz February 11, 2008 at 3:18 pm

It’s actually against the law in Australia to dock your dogs tails or crop their ears. It results in a fine of up to $10,000.

If you know of someone who has a Boston and had it’s tail docked, it is not a purebred! You will not pass off your mix as a pure BT, but who cares? Bostons either have no tail, a stub, or even a little curly que like a pig! It is a common misconception that they get their tails docked….the assistant at my vet’s office even asked me when I brought in my pregnant Boston if I planned on having their tails docked!! Thankfully, the vet knew better! In addition, some BT half breeds have a long tail with a quirk in it…..it is not because it was broken, it is just because where that little bend is is probably where the Boston tail would have stopped!

No Need to even worry, Bostons are born with no tail, more like a stub and their ears do not get cropped… They are the best dogs! I love mine, but beware they fart. and its not pretty

polarbear12190 February 14, 2008 at 3:34 pm

No, its okay to not get the ears of a boston cropped. The first boston I had lived to be 19 years old and her first owner, the one before me had her ears cropped and most bostons come with a natural curly tail. My Boston I have now has a long tail. All the other pups she was born with had the short tail, its a small chance to get one with a long tail, but most breeders prefer short tails. I didn’t have my 2nd bostons ears cropped and she just turned a year december 6th. One thing you can do to crop them your self is duck tape them up, I didnt do it to mine, but her ears tend to flop. She has had quite a time though with her eyes needing surgery because of her eye lids and all though, so her life has been hard to fix her ears. You can stick medical tape on the inside and its supposed to strengthen the ears.
