The Borzoi is a native of Russia. The appearance is elegant, tall and rather like that of a Greyhound with a silky longer coat. The original ancestor is most likely the dog known centuries ago as the Steppe Greyhound and the Borzoi retains many of the characteristics of this "sight hound". Russian nobility cherished this breed for its qualities of perseverance and endurance on the hunt. The Borzoi is a breed that would give chase, surround and worry the wolf until it could be brought down by the hunter.

The breed in the United States has become a favorite in the sport of Lure Coursing. Of course it is also well known as an exotic looking breed in the Conformation ring, being a member of the Hound Group. In fact it retains the hound instinct and is being used more and more in the western states as a natural coyote hunter.

The Borzoi can have a coat of many colors, there are no specific restrictions. The coat should be thick and luxurious except for the face and the fronts of the legs which should be smooth. This is a breed that should have the appearance of refined elegance and its manner and movement should be graceful and balanced. The ears are fold over and the muzzle should have a distinct "Roman nose" appearance. The dog is tall (26 to 28 inches at the withers) and should have a very deep chest. Loins should have a distinctive arch, so that the dog can run with great speed and length of stride at a gallop.

This ability is of course necessary because of the original function to hunt and bring to bay the wolves of ancient Russia. Furthermore this type of build allows for easy flexibility for quick turns. Form should follow function and in this case, regardless of the picture of beauty that this dog presents, it should be a dog which is able to carry out its original purpose. The total picture of this exotic looking breed should be that of aristocratic elegance coupled with especially graceful and free-flowing movement.

The Borzoi is not often considered as a pet. One can often see the Borzoi pictured in magazine photos as a hound walking with a fabulously dressed lady...but in truth it is not a dog for the inexperienced owner. It does have a streak of independence, as do most hounds. Many hound breeds were bred originally to run with a pack and therefore do not have the typical temperament of working breeds that functioned with humans as their pack leader.

The Borzoi should be trained early or he will be aloof and will not regard his owner as his Master. Furthermore they have the strongly rooted instinct to give chase and should be kept confined when outside. Free exercise in a fenced in enclosure is preferable to daily walks, as this dog needs a great deal of exercise . He will not be satisfactory as a pet in an apartment situation.

The Borzoi can survive in an apartment as long as she gets frequent exercise. A properly fenced yard could be better for her but keep in mind that she can easily jump a six foot fence. Once she gets on the run, she may catch a scent and be gone. She can not be trusted around small animals including the neighbors cat. She can kill an animal before you can stop her. She is ok with children but this is iffy. She dislikes roughhousing, arguing and likes her rest. She seems to be a one person dog that can be difficult to train. She is royal looking and beautiful.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Borzoi is at least 28 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 75 to 105 pounds and the female is at least 26 inches to the withers and 60 to 90 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Borzoi is no exception. Keep on the look out for gastric torsion (life-endangering distension of the stomach with gas), retinal atrophy (inherited disease of the retina that can cause vision loss and blindness), heart disease, and Osteosarcoma (bone cancer). They are also possible sensitive to certain drugs especially anesthetics and topical insecticides. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Borzoi has a long, silky coat with waves or curls. She should be brushed regularly. She is a seasonally heavy shedder. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and also help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with your pet. Her hair between her toes also needs to be maintained.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.
*Life Span. The Borzoi can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*History. The Borzoi is thought to hail back to the thirteenth century nobleman who used them to hunt. They were first registered with the American Kennel Association in 1891.

We begin this article with the basic facts about the breed, then follow up with an in-depth look at their personality.

Breed group: Hounds

Weight: male: 75-105, female: 60-85 lbs

Height: male: 28, female: 26 inches

Overview

It is believed that the first Borzoi was brought to Russia from Arabia in the 1600s. The Borzoi is a stylish sight hound that was adopted by the aristocracy, and then crossed with longer haired sheepdogs. They were then used as ferocious and courageous wolf hunters, and this led to them earning the name of Russian Wolfhounds. The Russian upper class bred these dogs and also hunted with them for hundreds of years. Ultimately the Borzoi's reputation spread throughout Europe, and Queen Victoria and many of the British aristocracy soon owned a Borzoi. These dogs became great gifts among royalty, and the Borzoi became more passive as his use as a companion dog became more.

Temperament

Borzois are sweet and intelligent dogs that are very arrogant and self aware, but they are very devoted to their family. They are rather warm with people they know well. This breed learns very easily, but their training should be based on respect. Being a sight hound, the Borzoi is extremely fast and has no territorial intuition. They can therefore not be trusted when not on a leash, unless when they are fenced in. The Borzoi gets along well with other dogs, but should not be left alone with other animals. It is advised that they are socialised well with cats and other animals at a very young age. Borzois are gracious dogs that will get along fine with children, but doesn't like rough play.

Care

The long silky coat of the Borzoi is easy to groom. It should be brushed on a regular basis with a firm hair brush, and dry shampooed when really needed. Bathing these dogs is usually difficult seeing that they are so big, but is not needed very often. The hair between their toes should also be clipped in order to keep their feet comfortable. These dogs will shed heavily on a seasonal basis.

Training

The Borzoi is a giant breed, and will not fit well into every family. Being a sight hound, they will need regular attention and control. They require basic obedience training and socialisation from a very young age onwards. They do extremely well in agility, and will not respond positively to cruel or unkind training methods. They are fairly easy to train seeing that they like to be clean. The Borzoi needs calm and patient and consistent training combined with mutual respect.

Health problems

Borzois are very strong animals and do not have a lot of health problems to be anxious about. This breed needs good nutrition because of their size, and special attention should be paid to their diets. The Borzoi is often unpredictable with medications, but overall they are very healthy.
