A fun little trailer I put together from some footage I shot a while back with my friend Brian Hewitt and his dog 'Hope'. 'Hope' got her name because Brian saved her at a shelter.

A team of 8 Border Collies! 4 of us had two BC's each and we hooked them up for the first time in this video. Normally we race in the 4 dog catagory. I currently sled with 3 of my Border Collies. I am waiting for Fixx to be old enough to join the fun and hopefully make a team of 4...but enough of us locally are sledding with our BC's that we can always make up a team somehow.

Scout is a Border Collie we were given four years ago. He is a beautiful tri-colored dog that is full of energy. The first two years we had him he hardly stopped running.

His family hated to give him up but they had moved from their home with two acres to a house with a very small yard. Scout was going crazy, and driving the neighbors crazy as well.

He loves our large yard and can run the 100+ foot distance from one side to the other in two seconds flat. He is beautiful to watch as he seems to hardly touch the ground.

Scout, like most Border Collies, gets along great with everyone and is never a problem with other dogs. He is also gentle with all the animals we have: cats, chickens, rabbit, guinea pigs and pet birds.

For four years he has been a wonderful companion and excellent pet. Now at six years old he is calming down and enjoys laying around the house for most of the day. He is very content as long as he is with one of us.

Border Collies are amazing dogs. Besides being used to herd sheep they have been used as war dogs, sled dogs, therapy and assistance dogs, in competitive sports, as search and rescue dogs, as hunting dogs and, always, as companions.

They come in various colors: black and white, tri-color, blue merle, red and white, liver, red merle, yellow, or white with small amounts of black, brown or red. They can weight anywhere from 25 pounds to 65 pounds.

Since Border Collies are so highly motivated to work many are enjoying the growing sport of Agility. This sport enhances the relationship between dog and handler and creates a confident, bold and motivated dog.

Border Collies also excel in Fly Ball and Frisbee competitions. In northern climates they make up sled-dog teams that are competitive in middle-distance races.

Like all Border Collies, Scout sheds during the spring and summer months. Ones with thick fur, like Scout, develop thick undercoats in winter which must be combed out at the beginning of summer.

Be careful in the hot summer months. Heat exhaustion is a killer. A typical Border Collie doesn't slow down in the summer so provide him with a little pool to cool off in when he is outside.

Even though Scout has the choice to be inside or out, if anyone is in the backyard he is out there with them, running and barking for the fun of it. He loves being able to jump into his little pool and splash around for a few seconds before he takes off on another run around the yard.

Scout is a great dog and we are very fortunate to have been given this beautiful and bright creature. But they are not for everyone.

Before you acquire a Border Collie puppy or adult make sure you have the space for them to run and that you want to spend two years training and thirteen more enjoying his high energy.

If you are interested in adopting a Border Collie consider fostering one from a rescue. You'll learn if a Border Collie is for you, save a life, and maybe even end up adopting your foster dog.

Tess had spent just over 4 months, from September 09 to February 2001, as a stray. Running wild on Stanley Hill overlooking Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. We understand she had been kept on a farm to be trained as a sheepdog but did not show any interest in herding so in September 2009, she had been given away to a lad to be kept as a family pet. Within a week of him taking her home, she had run off and in spite of all his efforts, she would not come back to him. In spite of efforts of dog wardens and many local people, Tess had vanished and remained out of human contact for long periods of time. On the odd occasions she was sighted, she stayed well out of reach, running away if people approached her. This past winter has been particularly bad on Shetland, with heavy, prolonged, snowfall and temperatures down below -15c on some occasions. On the odd occasions when there was a sighting, Ian Taylor, the Assistant Environmental Health Officer for Shetland Council would drive up into the hills in his pick up, sometimes alone and sometimes with others, to try and coax her in. She showed the will & ability to survive, gaining the respect of people who also had to cope with the harsh Shetland conditions, but the weather was not improving and if she was to be sure of surviving winter something would need to be done quickly. Ian decided the only course of action left was to try and trap her. The Council agreed his to plan and they sent for a professional humane dog trap, which ...

Border Collie Rescue took Natalia in from the RSPCA in February 2008. The Border Collie had been siezed by the RSPCA, along with another dog, after a tip off. The husband and wife who confined their two pet dogs to the kitchen for two years, with one running round in circles for so long it wore a groove in the lino, have been banned for life from keeping animals. Magistrates at Harrogate heard how the couple caused unnecessary suffering to Charmaine, a tan coloured Dobermann who was starved to the point of death and neglected Natalia, a Border collie which as well as constant circling had tried to claw her way through the kitchen door to freedom. Each pleaded guilty to four charges brought by the RSPCA under the 2006 Animal Welfare Act. They admitted two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to Charmaine and two charges of failing to ensure the needs of both dogs were met to the extent that they exhibited normal behaviour patterns. Prosecutor Stuart Berry said RSPCA Inspector Mike Pugh went to the couple's home and found Charmaine, who was sunken-eyed, collapsed and lying on her side in the kitchen with faeces on the floor, to be so emaciated a vet had to put her down. She had been unable to stand without assistance, her spine, ribs and pelvic bones were clearly visible and she had weighed 19.6kilos rather than the norm of 33kilos.
