Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise dog b reed is a member of the non-sporting group and its roots are originally  from the Mediterranean. This dog breed came the United States sometime around the 1950s but did not become popular with dog owners until the mid 1960s. And it was not until the year 1971 that the AKC (American Kennel Club) recognized the Bichon Frise as an official breed.

These cute animals are considered to be bouncy, playful, and extremely perky with character.  Some dog enthusiasts say that the Bichon Frise manages a happy-go-lucky outlook towards life.  These dogs are so friendly that strangers can come up to them and pet the dogs with no worry of aggression.  And suffice to say, the Bichon Frise gets along very well with young children.

This dog is very responsive, affectionate, and adores cuddling with its family. Because of its need for human companionship, the Bichon Frise cannot be left alone for too long a time.  He will become easily upset and bark until company arrives.

Upkeep And Maintenance

Even though they are small, the Bichon Frise does need a bit of daily exercise.  A simple walk on the leash, a few laps in the yard, or even rigorous indoor games will work just fine. If you have access to an enclosed backyard or perhaps a field, a great way to exercise these little guys is to have one of its owners stand on one side the grass, and a second owner at the far distance of the other side. Each of you will take turns calling your dog as you watch him run vigorously back-and-forth until he is easily tired.

When it comes to grooming, you will need to brush the Bichon Frise about every other day.  This dog breed has a white puffy coat that may need trimming and scissoring on an occasional basis.  And although the Bichon Frise does not shed, some hairs do become loose and could entangle with the rest of the coat, causing it to mat.

Health Information

Like most small dogs, you can look forward to the Bichon Frise with having a lifespan of up to 15 or more years.  Veterinarians suggest that you have this breed specifically tested for eye problems, knee dysplasia, and hip dysplasia.  Major health problems that seem to stem through a majority of Bichon Frise dogs are allergies, Cushing's disease, and patellar luxation.

History

This breed developed from the water spaniel or Barbet. Originally, the Bichon Frise was bred for a companion dog. It was never a hunting dog. Its name mean curly lap dog.

They traveled to different countries with sailors that used them to barter. It is thought that Spanish sailors took them to the Canary Islands.

This breed came from the Mediterranean area and went back to Italy from the Canary Islands and became pets of royalty. When the French invaded Italy during the 16th century, they took some of these dogs back home. In the latter 1800's having lost popularity in the royal courts, the Bichon Frise could be seen with beggars serving as catch-pennies, doing tricks at fairs and circuses, and working with organ grinders.

When World War I ended, some breeders started breeding them under controlled conditions. In 1956, a litter was born in the United States owned by the Picaults. Then two American breeders bought some Bichons and established the breed in the United States.

General Looks

They are white and very fluffy small dogs, but solid.They have black noses and their eyes are round. They hold their tails high.

Is This Your Breed?

They don't shed, but must be brushed daily because of their abundant fur, which will tangle and mat. They like to play and are gentle natured. Bichons like to be active and need to be exercised each day. They are a great dog for people with allergies.

Coat

They have a double coat. The outer coat is more curly and rough than the under coat and the under coat is cottony and thick.

Color

The fur color is white. Apricot, buff or cream is sometimes the color on the ears or shades some areas of the body.

Locomotion

This breed trots freely and with precision. It looks graceful.

Personality

They are easy going, playful, and tender. They are cheery and affectionate.

My Bichon puppy (10 months) .. running around the house doing the "Bichon Blitz" .. it's a trait of the Bichon breed.. For no reason at all, they just start running around the house.. Around the couch.. and then the table... It never stops being funny... She is just crazy!
