Is It Okay to Feed 1 Yr Old Beagle One Cup of Food Once a Day?

by Dogs.net on November 13, 2011

I normally put the food down and my beagle will not eat until I get home (around 4:30) and then he isn't hungry to eat his dinner. Can I just feed him around 5pm so that it is only once a day? He does get a frozen kong with peanut butter in it and small treats for peeing/pooping outside (still being housetrained). I do also give him a carrot as a treat at night.

That would be fine. If you notice he loses body condition on that schedule you can add more food or go back to what you were doing before.

I can’t see a problem with that. That’s what time I feed my 15 month old dog. I try to keep him on a schedule for his dinner. He also gets treats throughout the day. You sound like you’re doing a good job.

Twice a day for a beagle would be better, because they’re attentive and active. It’s best to never feed a dog after 7 or 9:30 at night. At least 2 cups a day would be my guess, but yeah.

He’s a year old? What you’re doing sounds right to me.

My older dog likes carrots too. And BOTH of them love the kong with peanut butter inside! That thing is a godsend!

My girl gets one cup first thing in the morning, her after noon treat of 2 doggie biscuits and 1/2 cup at night , just before bed,and her last outside trip. If I don’t give her the last 1/2 cup at night she whines at night.I started this at the vets suggestion and she hasn’t whined for over a year now.She does very well with this schedule and does not fluctuate in her weight. She’s been at 18 lbs for 3 years now.

That will be fine, just watch out for body weight loss, if he shows signs of weight loss, step up the food portions..

That is the way I feed mine. Depending on the needs of the individual dog they get between a cup to a cup and a half fed at sunset. The reason for the sunset thing is for convenience in the winter and to wait until it cools down a bit in the summer.
They each then get one small doggy cookie at bed time.
