How Do I Get My Beagle to Not Be So Overprotective of His Food?

by Dogs.net on December 7, 2011

I have a male Beagle, and he's really cute, but there's just one problem; whenever you're even near him while he's eating, he'll growl and bark like crazy. He doesn't seem to understand that nobody wants his food, and that no one is going to try to steal it. I'm afraid that it's going to get to the point where he'll try to bite someone, so I have to somehow stop this habit of his A.S.A.P. Any suggestions?

try hand feeding the beagle? or teaching it not to be aggresive near the food by being around it while its eating and over time it will be comfterable with you eating around it?

Drop a high value treat in or near his bowl when he’s eating. Don’t stop by the bowl, just keep walking past him. he’ll eventually learn that good things happen when you’re near his food bowl.

I’d guess someone messed with the dog’s food bowl in the past. Many people seem to think you should be able to put your hand in the bowl or take the food bowl away from the dog. This is a sure fire way of making the dog guard his food and not trust that you won’t steal it.

This problem is far more easily prevented than corrected. For your NEXT dog, please enroll in Sirius Puppy Classes and get the accompanying Sirius Puppy dvd. Then you will learn how to prevent this problem and many others as well as how to have the best dog you ever owned.

If you want a book on this subject that discusses what to do and how to do it, the BEST one is titled “MINE!” by Jean Donaldson. You can buy it at Dogwise online, http://www.dogwise.com.

If you don’t have time to read a whole book and learn a lot of things, you would really do best by hiring a PR trainer to come to your home and work with your dog. Just go to http://www.clickertraining.com and click the “find a trainer” link. This will connect you to a nationwide database of experienced, certified and approved dog trainers. You are sure to find someone in your area.

Until you get some help, feed the dog someplace where he won’t be around people. A spare room, or laundry room with a door that closes, or in an area you have baby-gated off for this purpose. Set the food down, let the dog in and shut the door or gate behind him. After 20 minutes let him out to go outside.
