A neighbor of mine has a beagle. But I haven't heard him bark or howl ever. (Just a little bit) So how can you tell/pick the dog that is not vocal/doesn't bark right when you adopt one. And which is better, basset hound or beagle?

make the dog cry, scare him a bit but not threaten him you you might end up getting bite marks.. basset hounds usually are for pleasure purposes only (they can’t run or scare away bad guys) while beagles are mostly both.. i’d say beagle but both of them are so cute, why not buy both? ΓΌ
It is called training all beagles can be noisy as they are a hound, Basset’s are noisy as well because they are a hound you have to train them not to bark.
I got a beagle about 3 years ago. She actually used to bark a bit more when she was little, but now she just barks if someone is at the door or if something scared her. I’ve never actually been around basset hounds before so I can’t tell you about them. I love my beagle though she is the cutest dog ever to me.
LOL!!! It’s so hard to say. There was a beagle at our shelter that was very quiet. I never heard the dog bark for over a month. Over time the dog warmed up to me and I guess became a little less sad over his original owners leaving. After adjusting to the shelter the dog barks like mad. Everytime someone comes in that walks it often – it barks, if it goes outside and sees rabbits- it barks.
One of the first times I saw the beagle bark was when a rabbit was outside. I would take the dog for a walk and see if it begins barking at something. Because when they start sometimes they won’t stop. Beagles are a vocal breed and can become fixated on an object and bark. Sometimes it will take awhile for them to be less shy.
If it were me and I to really try to make sure the dog wasn’t a major barker I would contact rescues that have foster homes. You could mention that you’re looking for a quieter beagle. Hopefully the foster would be able to tell you honestly about the dog. From my experience with beagles the majority are loud and bark often.
Usually a male is more vocal than a female. You can train them not to bark but it would be a good idea if you find out if they have a strong prey drive by using a toy on a string to see if they go after it.
