The Australian Cattle Dog, or ACD, is a unique and exciting breed of dog. While they were originally bred to herd livestock, they make a great companion. Cattle Dogs are known for their intelligence, agility, and spirit. A less desirable quality is that they can sometimes exhibit aggressive behavior. One of the traits that early breeders bred for was protectiveness. Being protective of the flock is a great characteristic in a herding dog. Many Australian Cattle Dogs generalize this protectiveness into guarding all of their owner's possessions. This can be good, as well. The problem arises when this natural desire to protect is found in an animal that hasn't been socialized. Socialization is the most important factor in preventing, and sometimes stopping, aggression. Aggression is generally a side affect of fear. Fear is nearly always caused by a lack of experience. Think of it as fear of the unknown. One of the best ways to socialize a puppy is by exposing it to new experiences. One of the best ways to do that is doggy daycare. Daycare exposes the puppy to multiple new experiences each time that it's there. As the puppy learns that it has nothing to fear from new experiences, its confidence grows. Confident animals don't need to be aggressive. What if you have a mature Australian Cattle Dog that's aggressive? This can be a little tougher to deal with. In older pets, aggression is generally fear related too. What makes it tougher to deal with in older dogs is that they're bigger and stronger than puppies. Socialization is still the solution for older animals. Taking them to a busy daycare facility isn't always a practical idea though. For older ACDs begin with a daily walk. The walk can be a time when dominant/sub-dominant roles can be clearly defined between master and pet. Remember that firmness, not overt dominance is the key here. When your ACD is comfortable walking on a leash, begin to structure the walk to be in areas with light to moderate foot traffic. The idea is for your Heeler to realize that encountering another person or canine while on a walk is no reason to be afraid. When your ACD can handle light interaction with passers by, begin going to more congested areas. The idea is to gradually develop your Australian Cattle Dog's confidence to the point where it doesn't feel easily threatened. One thing to avoid is those collars that are designed to dig into the dog's neck when the leash is pulled on. This causes a fight or flight reaction. If you accept the idea that fear causes aggression, creating something else to be feared doesn't make sense.
Another cause of aggression can be found in Heelers that haven't been neutered. Neutering your pet can lessen aggression and other unsavory behaviors like urine marking. It can also reduce the chance of other health problems as well as the number of unwanted animals that are killed each year. For many enthusiasts, the Australian Cattle Dog is the ultimate in an intelligent, athletic, and protective pet. Learning to stop aggressive behavior will improve the life of both you and your pet.

If you are looking for an intelligent dog that will act as a guard dog, then the Australian Cattle Dog may be perfect for you!

Bred in the 19th century by early settlers, the Australian Cattle Dog is a mix of Collies imported from Scotland and Australian dingoes with a few other breeds thrown in for good measure. This dog, also known as the Blue Heeler, the Australian Heeler in the Queensland Heeler is one of the best herding breeds known and gets his name due to the fact that he nips at the heels to herd.

That being said, as a pet you may find your Australian Cattle Dog exhibiting herding behavior. This dog can be a one-man dog so to speak, and may nip at the heels of your friends when they come to visit trying to herd them. Proper training needs to be done in order to have a pet that does not chase off everyone you know.

The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent breeds and along with this intelligence comes the need to be kept busy and useful. If you a lot of time in your hands and want to work with a dog for agility training this breed might be your perfect match. He can be easily trained to be an obedient dog but you must vary the training so that he doesn't get bored.

The Australian cattle dog is a medium-size dog about 17 to 20 inches and around 35 pounds. He is a powerful, compact dog and is very agile on his feet. Ears stand up straight and pointed at the top of his broad head. He has intelligent oval eyes that are dark in color. He has a short double coat that can be either red with speckles or blue with speckles. The blue variety is sometimes seen with blue, tan or black markings.

The Australian Cattle Dog does need a lot of exercise and will do well with a house that has a large fenced in yard. If he doesn't get enough exercise you will probably see behavioral problems. This breed is very loyal to his master but can be dominant of other dogs and suspicious of strangers. He will do well with children that he's been raised with since he was a puppy but might not be so good with new children introduced after he is an adult.

This breed is easy to grom and just needs brushing with the firm brush and a bath when needed. He's a moderate shedder, shedding twice a year. Health problems to watch out for include deafness and hip dysplasia.

Just like any other dog, the Australian Cattle Dog needs love and attention from his family. Early obedience training as a must and to keep the dog interested it is advised to have activities or jobs for him to perform. Agility and ring training are perfect activities for this dog. With good quality food and proper veterinary care this dog can live to be around 15 years of age.

Rabbit escapes unharmed. Training points of interest: Good study in the differences between the best motivators for different dogs. For Sam, play is the best reward. He'd pick a retrieve over a cookie or a pet. He will work hardest for this. I will get some footage of him at dinnertime as well - that's a distant second. You can see a big difference in intensity and especially response speed to commands with different rewards. Also, note that talk is minimal. One word feedback (no, good) and minimal white noise, which is what chatter is to a dog. Note at 0:19. bad timing. He had complied to the command within .5 seconds and did not get reinforcement til 1 second later. That's too late (this was a play session, not training, or it'd have been a big mistake). Even at 1:08 it was cutting it quite close. Making timing mistakes consistently is IMO one of the most common mistakes people make with their dogs and it definitely impacts behavior. This is one reason why you get these dogs who "only obey when they want to". Better examples are at 0:32 (note he immediately quieted). 1:42-1:45, 1:59 and 2:12 is better (and a good example of the great potential of this dog!) BTW this is a dog that is HIGH HIGH prey drive with small animals. He lives with cats (has his own kitten) and 2 guinea pigs, but the rabbit had just arrived. Once he's desensitized to a new small animal he's actually got an extreme level of control and is one of very few dogs ever, I would consider reliable even if ...

The oldest dog on record was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey. Bluey lived to be almost 30 years old. That figure is in human years.Dogs mature more rapidly than humans. According to dog age experts, a one-year-old dog is really about age 15 in human equivalent years. The average life expectancy of The Australian Cattle Dog is about 12-15 years.

Bluey was exceptional in that he outlived all the online life expectancy calculations. It may have been his diet or his genetics. The life expectancy of dogs increase dramatically because of better diets, better health care, and better living conditions.

Bluey was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months. The official AKC breed name for Bluey is "Australian Cattle Dog". Sometimes these

dogs are called "heelers" because they were developed in Australia for controlling cattle. The dogs were trained to herd cattle by nipping and biting at their heels.

Ancestors:

Bluey's ancestors are Collies, Dalmatians, and the native Australian Dingo.Bluey was heavier and more muscular than his ancestor the Border Collie.

The ACD have been working on Australian ranches since early in this century.Bred to withstand extreme temperatures and the resourcefulness to forage to

feed itself like a wild dog made the ACD a very independent pet.

Physical Characteristics:

The coat is smooth with a double coat that it is resistant to the elements. The breed sheds constantly and requires regular brushing.

Bluey and his breed are:

* Sturdy and compact herding dogs

* Well-developed muscles

* Powerful, strong and agile

Size & Height:

The breed is medium in size

* Weighs around 32-35 pounds

* Height of 17-20 inches.

Personality:

Bluey and his breed are very good with the family children. This breed has a natural protective instinct. They are very loyal dogs and are easy to train. These dogs need to attend dog obedience classes. As a result of their dog obedience classes, they will be absolutely obedient companions.

The ACD tends to show some aggressive tendencies toward noisy and strange children that tend to tease the animal. These dogs will nip at the heels of people

and children because of their inherent "heeler" traits. They may be suspicious of individuals as well as other dogs.

This breed needs regular exercise. A daily walk will keep the dog satisfied. This breed is very easy to train. The dog wants to stay busy so engage the dog in stimulating activities like "fetch" or the frisbee.

Give the Australian Cattle Dog a toy and he will play with the toy until the toy is totally destroyed. They will run and fetch sticks, balls and even cans. The breed is fun and playful and make excellent companions for children.

Physical Accommodations:

* Requires a large open yard.

* Barks at any change in environment

* Needs attention.

When an Australian Cattle Dog is bored they tend to become destructive. The dog will destroy any object left in his area. The ACD is a very active dog and wants to run and jump in open areas.

Health Problems:

Genetic health problems may include the following:

* Deafness

* Progressive retinal atrophy (causes blindness)

* Hip dysplasia,

* Temperament abnormalities.

* Deficit of attention disorders

Few ACD owners complain of loneliness or lack of companionship with this breed. The ACD wants love and attention and will give these back ten fold. Bluey is no longer with us but the ACD breed , Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most popular dogs in the United States and in the UK.
