This is my 7 year old Alaskan Malamute "Shiloh" (Male) he just weighed in at 180 pounds at our vets office. I got him from a breeder here in Pennsylvania were I live. He was the largest in his litter. Not sure why he is this big, he doesnt even eat that much! UPDATE: Shiloh passed away July-26-2010. He was 8 years old. The American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standard calls for a natural range of size, 75 pounds (34 kg) for females, 85 pounds (39 kg) for males.

The Alaskan Malamute might be a very poor choice for an apartment. They are large, intelligent dogs that need room to exercise and they can shed profusely. She is an Artic sled dog, bred for power, big muscles, deep chest and vigor. She has a thick, coarse coat, of course, and a wooly undercoat. They come in various coat colors, ranging from light grey through black, sable and even a red tint. The tail is carried over the back of the animal.

The Malamute does not like warm climates due to its heavy fur that was designed to withstand extremes in cold. Shaving this dog so it tolerates heat has the opposite effect because of the way dogs cool themselves. They are very friendly but not suitable for an apartment as they shed heavily, are large and need exercise. Fencing this dog in will help in the exercise area, as long as the climate is cool. They will seriously dig so if you fence, some of the fence needs to be buried to keep them in. Also, if you have a nice landscaped yard, you had a nice landscaped yard.
*Are Malamutes good with children? They are good with older children. They are a large breed so younger children may get hurt by them accidentally. They love people. Never leave young children alone with a dog for any length of time without adult supervision.
*Temperament. The Alaskan Malamute is friendly, affectionate, loyal,
devoted, playful and not a one man dog.
*Approximate Adult Size. Males run about 25 inches at the highest point
of their shoulders and can weigh 85 pounds. Females run about 23 inches
to the top of their shoulders and weigh in at about 75 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. The Malamute may be subject to hip dysplasia, cataracts, inherited polyneuropathy and progressive retinal atrophy.
*Grooming. They shed quite a bit of fur. Brushing several times a week is good and baths should be rare. Their coat generally does not smell.
*Life Span. They live between 12 to 15 years with proper nutrition and care.
*History. The Malamute is a Nordic dog that originally came from the Wolf. Its name comes from the Mahlemut tribe of upper western Alaska, who used Malamutes for transportation. These dogs have been very valuable as freight and work dogs through the ages. They were especially prized during the Alaskan gold rush of 1896. They even helped Admiral Richard Byrd reach the South Pole. DNA testing reveals that they are one of the oldest breeds of dogs.
*SPECIAL GOOD POINTS
They hardly bark.
Very friendly.
Generally like everyone, including outsiders.
They keep themselves clean.
*SPECIAL NEGATIVE POINTS
Can be predatory against small animals.
They hardly bark.
Poor watch dog.
May be aggressive towards other dogs.
May attempt to dominate his owner.
Gets bored. Needs mental stimulation.
May howl like a wolf.
May ignore commands.
May dig when bored, or to escape an enclosure.

The Alaskan Malamute might be a very poor choice for an apartment. They are large, intelligent dogs that need room to exercise and they can shed profusely. She is an Arctic sled dog, bred for power, big muscles, deep chest and vigor.

Can be difficult to housebreak.

Sheds like crazy.

If you want hardy winter outdoor dog then the Alaskan Malamute may be the one for you!

This breed, descended from the Arctic Wolf, has roots in Alaska where it has been used by Alaskan Eskimos to pull sleds for over 2000 years. These hard-working dogs have great strength and endurance and have pulled sleds on many expeditions including Admiral Byrd,s expeditions to the North Pole.

Weighing in at around 80 to 95 pounds ( 70 - 85 for females) and growing to 24 to 26 inches ( a few inches shorter for females), the Alaskan Malamute is on the large side and part of the AKC Working group. Alaskan Malamutes have an average litter size of six puppies. With good care they can live to be 15 years old.

The sweet expression on these dogs make them just about the cutest puppies ever and they grow into beautiful sweet adults as well. Their disposition is just as sweet as it looks and they make loving pets, but a bit strong willed. they have a thick coat on a solid well-built body. Ears are held erect on a wide head and eyes are dark and almond shaped. There may be some Alaskan Malamutes with blue eyes, however this is a fault which would disqualify your dog in the show ring. The coat can be from 1 to 3 inches long and comes in Wolf Gray, solid white, black and white, red and a red undercoat with gray outer coat. Many dogs have a dark mask and other dark markings and the legs and muscle are usually white.

These dogs are loyal and affectionate, a great family pet and good with children. They are friendly to strangers but may not get along with small animals as they have a strong prey instinct. They also may not get along good with other dogs and early socialization and firm training are important to raising an obedient pet.

Alaskan Malamutes love the outdoors, especially in winter time. Taking your Malamute on a winter walk or bringing him with you when you are snowshoeing or cross-country skiing is a real treat. They can be happy in a fenced in yard but they do like to be around their "pack" so you need to be sure to spend lots of time with your dog even if you keep him outside. this is an act of dog that needs plenty of exercise and will do best with a large yard. It is not advised to let them run free, as this breed will roam in his territory. They can withstand cold temperatures well but in hot climates you need to make sure that the dog does not overheat. Be aware that they are diggers and if you do not bury your fence quite a bit under the ground you will soon find a large hole and no dog inside the fence.

This is a fairly hardy breed with few health problems. They can have hip dysplasia just like any other breed and may be prone to dwarfism. They are rather clean dogs and virtually odorless. they are heavy shedders and grooming consist of brushing twice a week and an occasional dry shampoo.

When Jack London wrote the novel "Call Of The Wild", the main canine character "Buck" was more than likely a dog which had at least some Alaskan Malamute in his bloodline. This dog is a native of Alaska, tracing his roots back to the Mahlemut tribe , an ancient Indian culture which is seldom mentioned without a mention also of their faithful dogs. These dogs helped them with almost every aspect of their daily living, from fishing and hunting to hauling in the hunt. The Alaskan Malamute is just one representative of the many different breeds which were used in the settling of the great territory of Alaska, a region whose vast reaches of inhospitable climate required a beast of burden who could live off the land, who had great speed and who could pull heavy loads. The fact that there were already large numbers of dogs being used for these purposes made it natural that the cold reaches of the northern territory would be mostly explored and populated with the help of the dogs.

There is a historical possibility that the Alaskan Malamute, one of the largest of the sledge dogs, owes some of his size and strength to the Arctic Wolf, a very large white animal nearly twice the size of the Alaska Malamute. This may be true or not. Crosses are routinely engineered today in captivity, but no one really knows whether such a cross would occur in the wild. If it is true that he descended from a cross with the wolves, this may account for his strong acceptance of being a "pack dog" in the sled dog teams and his willingness to be within such a group. There are few "societies" of animals which are as similar in their interactions to human society than the "society" of a team of sled dogs. In the animal kingdom, the society of wolves is very similar. Despite his "pack" mentality, the Alaskan Malamute possess an affinity to humans, loving not only to work for man, but loving humankind altogether and without reserve.

The Alaskan Malamute is a beautifully marked dog, with sharp contrast of white and black or white and gray, with the darker colors being grizzled with silvery tips on the ends of the hairs. He gives the impression of great strength and heavy bone, even though he is not particularly tall and is not considered a giant breed like the Mastiff or the Newfoundland. His height is 25 inches at the shoulder. The coat is double and dense and off standing, one or two inches in length all over the body with a large ruff around the neck of longer hair, providing weather resistant protection against the elements. Weekly brushing is required for good coat care and skin health.

The Alaskan Malamute has a long history of being a companion to man, so it is no wonder that he is so affectionate. He is one of the dogs that often excels as a Therapy Dog, seeming to have an understanding of people that is beyond the norm and many people react to this large, loving, bushy haired dog in the same way. He has gained popularity as a pet in the rural areas and loves to go on camping trips with his family, or jogging, or almost any outdoor activity. In the city this is a dog that brings admirers while out walking and can do quite well in a townhouse or apartment as long as he is exercised daily.

This is the dog breed you'll most likely see running in front of the sleigh in polar expeditions, where the cold keeps normal humans away. They have very thick and soft fur that easily protects them from the cold, and they are accustomed to cold climates as well. It is a dog breed that will grow into a very calm and intelligent adult, but they never lose their playfulness. They have a very strong natural hunting instinct however, and even though they are otherwise very loyal and easy to teach they will react naturally when "prey" appears.

They love running, and need as much exercise as possible. Most Alaskan Malamutes live approximately 10 years, and the only known health issue for this race is cancer (which kills about 36%). The Alaskan Malamutes exist in warmer location around the world, but are not suited for this at all and should typically be kept in a colder environment where their thick furcoat comes to good use. Though Alaskan Malamutes are normally used to transport people or material using sleds, they are sometimes also involved in racing and kept as family pets. Although they are great companions and very loving, the Alaskan Malamute can be ver stubborn, so they are best suited to those with experience in dog ownership who can quickly establish who is boss. The Alaskan Malamute is also very possessive when it comes to food, so feeding should be separate from other dogs or animals.

The Malamute is a descendant of dogs from the Mahlemuits tribe of upper western Alaska. This breed had an important role towards their human companions - working, hunting, and living alongside them. The relationship between the Mahlemuits and their dogs was good for both of them. They helped each other out and managed to survive in the otherwise not very welcoming Arctic Circle. For a short period during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 the Malamuites and their sled dogs became valuable to the settlers roaming around the area, and they were frequently crossbred with imported breeds as an attempt to improve the breed, or to simple create more of them to be used. This seems to have had no long standing effect on the modern Malamute, and recent DNA analysis shows that Malamutes are one of the oldest breeds of dog, genetically distinct from other dog breeds. The Malamute is one of the most "unaltered" of breeds, retaining its original form and function.

In this article we will firstly look at the simple stats of this great breed, then move on to an in-depth look at whether you will be suited to this dog.

Breed group: Working

Weight: male 85 lbs, female 75 lbs

Height: male 25, female 23 inches

Overview

Many agree that the Alaskan Malamute is one of the most unchanged breeds today. These dogs are originally from the western part of Alaska, and it is believed that they are the descendants of the dogs of the Mahlemut Tribe. This breed is very distinctive, and also very significant to the people in this area. The Alaskan Malamute helps these people with all areas of life - this includes tasks such as hunting as well as living with them. Many agree that the Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest dog breeds today, and there is DNA proof supporting this claim.

Temperament

The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely loyal dog which is also very clever and friendly. When these dogs reach maturity, they will usually settle in being a calm and gentle adult dog. Seeing that these dogs are very friendly, they are not ideal guard dogs. Even although these dogs are very intelligent, they can also be stubborn. This breed has a strong intuition, and it is therefore best to keep an eye on them when they are around small animals.

Care

This breed requires a lot of maintenance, and their coats will have to be brushed quite a few times during the week. It is also important to look after the teeth of these dogs as well by brushing it as often as you brush their coats. The toe nails of these dogs should also be trimmed. The Alaskan Malamute sheds it coats twice during the course of the year, and by brushing it, the shedding will be minimized.

Training

The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely active dog, and they will therefore need intensive training for them to learn how to behave. These dogs were originally bred for sledding and also to be independent which often lead to them being stubborn. But apart from this, they are still highly intelligent dogs.

Health problems

Potential owners should be aware that these dogs do have some health issues. The Alaskan malamute is prone to hip dysplasia, and they are often suffering from chrondodysplasia and muscle tone and weakness problems. This breed also has a tendency to develop cataracts, and have problems with their eye sight as they get older. But in general these dogs are fairly healthy, and the majority of the common health problems are seen as normal in the larger dog breeds.

The Alaskan Malamute is a medium-large to large dog that weighs between 70-95 pounds and measures up to 25". They are best known as sled dogs and are used to hard work. They ideal for cold climates or homes that will keep them cool and hydrated in hot summers. The Alaskan Malamute has a thick, coarse outer coat and woolly, dense undercoat. They are dressed for cold weather. If you own an Alaskan Malamute and live in a warmer climate, you need to make sure that they have a place to get out of the sun and plenty of water.

They come in a variety of colors including solid white, shadings of light to medium gray, black, sable, and red. In animals with shadings, parts of legs, feet, the underbody, and part of face markings are predominantly white. The AKC does not recognize any other solid colors than white.

Alaskan Malamutes are independent, friendly and loyal. They are more active as puppies and tend to mellow when they get older. They are chewers, diggers and explorers. If you don't want it played with, than put it away. When your Alaskan Malamute is outside, make sure that they can't dig out of the yard or jump over they fence. They are not good apartment, small home or city dogs. They love to be outside and need plenty of room to play. Because they are extremely playful as puppies, they would be better for older children until they become calmer. They work best with other animals and pets when they are socialized at a young age. They can be aggressive towards other dogs and can consider small animals prey. This is an ideal dog for a family home that allows plenty of outdoor time to play and explore

The breed dates back over 2000 years and is a native of Alaska. They were originally used as sled dogs by the Alaskan Malamute Eskimo tribe. In addition to a companion dog, the Alaskan Malamutes are still used as sled dogs for racing, exploration and families living in arctic regions.

As hardworking sled dogs, they are important household pets for families living in cold, snow covered areas and imperative to their way of life. If you are looking for an independent but loving companion, the Alaskan Malamute is a perfect dog for you.
