WHY ARE SOME DOGS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS?

There are some dog breeds that were actually bred to be aggressive using selective breeding practices. Some dog breeds were originally bred to be fighting dogs such as the Akita dog breed while others may have been bred to be fierce guard dogs. Dogs such as the German Shepherd or Doberman are breeds that are prone to loyalty and protectiveness. This instinct can be tapped into to train these dogs to become fierce watchdogs.

Every dog is unique regardless of his or her breed. You can meet a kind and gentle Rottweiler and you can also meet a mean and fierce Poodle. The way that a dog behaves does not only depend on bloodlines but just as much on how the dog was raised.

A dog can be conditioned to be fierce through abuse. Some of the training practices to train dogs to be guard dogs are actually quite abusive. A dog that is scared and fearing for its safety will naturally tend to attack. Attacking a dog physically will provoke it.

While it is true that starting off with a breed which is known to have a tendency towards aggression makes it more likely that a dog will be aggressive, there are also dogs that come from aggressive lineage but that have always been treated well and are good-natured.

DOG AGGRESSION AND CHILDREN

Many studies have been done on children being attacked by dogs. While the researchers may have set out wanting to know which breed of dog was the most responsible for attacks on children, what they have found is that while the breed of dog is not consistent in terms of attacks, what is consistent is the age of the children. Most studies have found that the majority of dog bites and vicious dog attacks occur against children between the ages of five and nine.

Dogs are pack animals with a strong social hierarchy. The one who feeds and gives instruction in a household is usually an adult. A pet dog will equate this behavior from this adult as similar to the behavior of the Alpha dog in the pack. Therefore a dog is less likely to attack his master.

Young children may be seen as peers that can be dominated so that the dog can get ahead in the hierarchy. A dog which shows domination tendencies towards children such as humping them should not be left unattended with children because signs of trying to dominate children could be a signal that this dog could become aggressive with this child.

A dog who humps adult visitors may be simply trying to show that in this house he or she is above the visitor in the hierarchy but he will not necessarily bite. Perhaps children under the age of five are not left unattended with dogs as often as children between the ages of five and nine and this may explain why there are more incidences with children over the age of five.

It has been found that three out of four dog attacks against children are by the family’s own pet. Something else which people may find equally shocking is that friendly lovable dogs like Golden Retrievers have as many incidences attacking children as other breeds. One conclusion that has been made from this is that the more popular a breed is, the more chances there are that dog bites will come from this breed purely because of the numbers.

FATAL DOG ATTACKS

While all dog breeds may become aggressive in certain circumstances, the number one dog breed for causing fatalities is the Pit Bull Terrier. The Rottweiler comes in second. The problem of fatal dog attacks increases every year as these two breeds have become more popular. For this reason it is important for governments to make decisions on the conditions in which these breeds are allowed to co-exist with humans.

Some cities and countries such as Denmark, Holland and Norway have banned Pit Bull Terriers completely. Others say that this does not address the problem of dog aggression because Pit Bull Terriers are not the only dogs attacking, maiming and killing children. One thing that is certain is that a solution needs to be found to prevent such horrifying and meaningless deaths. At present, how to deal with dog aggression is a widely debated topic all over the world.

Be prepared for the movement of your puppy, remember they are unpredictable.

If your dog has a weakness for peanut sweets, biscuits, or stinky cheese, use them to take that perfect akita pictures. This works wonderful when photographing people with dogs. Try to have the person and the dog to look both in the same direction. Make sure all parties in the picture looks sensual with one another.

Study your akita’s behaviour prior to the photo session to see what sets him apart from the concentration. If you want to take special akita pictures, behavior is the key. What do they do to amuse themselves? Do they have the very thing habits as their owners?

Another pursuit to akita pictures is to take the shot when your dog isn’t looking. Some of the finished photographs are taken when the dog is forgetful to the camera. It is whilst these times when you catch that certain extirpation or when he nearly looks human.

Before you begin your akita training, be sure that you fully understand the exercise and commands you are about to teach your dog. Do not aim any teaching if you are in doubt. A lot of folks think that training akitas from takes loads of time but the true fact is that it does not take that much time at all. It does, however, take a lot of your and your dog’s patience.

Dog training opportunities are all around, where your dog is most comfortable. You will also find there is plenty time to communicate with your dog while completing the tasks and activities of your daily life.

The motivation for your akita to learn is praise delivered in a pleasant tone of voice, pack behaviour, food and games. Remember this throughout the whole akita training course.

Akita dogs do not understand our language, even though many owners assume they do. You can be sure that if akita seems to be making errors, the fault lies with the trainer who is not communicating the message clearly enough to the animal. When training a akita to do something, make sure that your voice is clear and your tone is firm.

When teaching, the dog may begin to lose interest, so get him to do an activity he likes and can achieve, praise him for it and finish training, play short game, and try again later in the day.

Never leave a long recall line on your dog when he is is left unattended. If the connection ring gets snagged and caught on object, the akita could get hurt.

The Japanese Akita is not a suitable dog as a normal family pet. It was originally bred in the Akita Prefecture in Japan, as a hunting dog, for deer, wild boar and even bears. For this purpose, it required to be a large, strong dog with confident, dominant tendecies and an independent nature. The Akita is also known as Akita Inu, which is Japanese for dog.

The average height for the Akita is between 24 to 28 inches and will weigh from eighty to one hundred and ten pounds. He has strong, heavy bones and a muscular body. This is a lot of dog!

The Akita has a double coat, which is harsh and waterproof, with a thick, dense undercoat. It sheds profusely, all year round and requires brushing and grooming every day. The coat can be white, brindle or tan and any mix of these. The dense coat of this breed means that he is happy in the snow but he will suffer in a hot climate.

This is not a dog for inexperienced owners, or for people who are elderly or weak. Akitas are intelligent and athletic and when socialized are faithful and affectionate but will always strive for the dominant position in the family group. He may show aggression towards family members and may not suit a family with small children. With this breed, it is vital that you are the Alpha Dog and that he knows his place in your “pack”!

The Akita may show aggression towards other dogs and small animals and should not be allowed to roam off-leash in public areas where there are many people and other dogs.

Training Akitas

The Akita can be difficult to train because they are intelligent and stubborn and can quickly become bored. it should never be a question of “asking” an Akita to do something. It must always be a strong command from a dominant owner. When you say “NO”, mean it and make it stick. You may have problems with house training, as Akitas suffer from urinary infections in infancy.

If you take an Akita into your family, you must be prepared to spend time and effort on training, socializing, excercise and grooming. This large dog also costs a lot to feed.

Akitas in the Family

There are conflicting opinions about the suitability of Akitas with young children. Historically, the breed had a strong reputation for being protective of young children and were often left in sole charge. Other opinions point out the dominant nature of the breed and the fact that these dogs will compete for their place in the pack. Certainly, a young child will be no match physically for an adult Akita.

Proper supervision of the behavior of the dog and the children is essential in this situation. Having said this, a well socialized Akita will be more comfortable with this.

Akitas make extremely good guard dogs. They have a strong territorial instinct and will be very protective of family and property. As a watch dog, they are quietly effective. They do not bark unnecessarily but will certainly raise the alarm at the approach of any strange visitors or sounds.

The average lifespan of the Akita is about 12 years. Like many other breeds of dog, cancer is the most common cause of death. Recent surveys in both the United Kingdom and the USA/Canada revealed this to be the case, with other causes including cardiac and bloat/torsion.

The Akita or Akita Ken is a dogbreed originating from Japan. They’re named after the Akita prefecture, where they originated from and were used by Matagi (traditional Japanese hunters) for hunting wild animals, specifically bears. Thus they are also sometimes called Akita Matagi as well. The name Akita Matagi actually means “medium-sized bear-hunting dogs”. Japanese dogs were originally relatively small and no larger breeds existed. However, since year 1603 Akita Matagis were used as fighting dogs. Not only for hunting, but also in professional fights, much like the ones arrange illegally still today. In 1868 Akita Matagis were crossed with Tosas and Mastiffs, two other related dog breeds. And due to this the size of the bread increased a lot. In 1908 dog fighting was prohibited, but this breed was nevertheless preserved and improved as a large Japanese breed.

During World War II (1939-1945), it was common to use dogs as a source of fur for military garments. The police ordered the capture and confiscation of all dogs other than German Shepherd Dogs used for military purposes. Thus, when the war was over Akitas had been drastically reduced in number, and not only due to military involvement but also due to lack of food. Many people bred Akita with Alsatians to avoid capture, and therefore the purebred Akitas were reduced even more. It is estimated that there were only twenty of these left after the war in all of Japan! At this time the breed only existed in Japan as well, and it is still there that it is found the most. The Akita was registered with the AKC in 1972.

The life expectancy of the Akita is approximately 10-13 years. As with all dog breeds there are a number of health issues to keep in mind. The include luxating patella, thyroid problems, lupus, cancer, vWD, PRA, skin conditions, and autoimmune problems. Both parents of your puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates and be Thyroid tested. The Akita breed is a very devoted and loyal one, and is also usually calm and intelligent as well. They can however be tough training due to being stubborn and easily getting bored. They are also sometimes aggressive against both other Akitas and smaller animals. Otherwise they are great house dogs. They require moderate, but regular exercise. Akitas are also known to be very quiet, only barking when there is something to bark about.

All in all this is a great dog breed and has many great characteristics.

The Akita dog is for the strong-willed. They are not to be scared of or avoided. These dogs are not wolves to begin with. They only look like wolves. They happen to be the most intelligent, affectionate and ever loyal companions known to man.

You have to be very keen on your decision of bringing home an Akita Inu to be part of your household and your family. These dogs are of dominant upbringing and it’s your role to let him classify you as the leader of the family. Any kind of dog will go wild if you treat them unjustly. The Akitas can be trained even without professional help and without obedience school. They are easy to get along with and easy to bring up.

It is advisable to make your Akita puppy as sociable as possible since grown up Akita dogs have this tendency to be over protective and territorial when it comes to their pack. The pack consists of you and everyone else in the family. If you’re having babysitters that come over during weekends, it’s best that you introduce them to your Akita. Otherwise, they will not finish their jobs and go home all frightened since your Akita just growled and appeared to want them for dinner.

If you have a very busy lifestyle, the Akita is definitely not for you. You have to always be around to bond with the dog and secure a lasting relationship for 10 to 12 years of its existence. Another word of advice, if you are planning to bring home a 2 year old Akita dog, it is best that you have grown children already. These dogs have an aggression problem and they do not seem to like very noisy children that run around the house all the time.

These dogs are indeed disciplinarians to begin with. They have this air of authority and power especially over younger children. Educate them to be behaved at all times and soon enough, the Akita dog will get accustomed to their lifestyle and will start laying down his guard.

These dogs are often part of rescue teams, as guard dogs and even bomb sniffers. They are well adept to these high profile works so you must keep them busy and alert and keep them away from cats and other dogs if they have problems with aggressiveness. They tend to be territorial so the visitors can be driven away by a nasty growl. Let your dog understand that they are good people and there is no need to be protective.

Compared to the other long haired breeds, the Akita dogs are often much easier to maintain. They have a resilient, odorless fur coat that requires no extra cutting or trimming as compared to Poodles or Chow Chows. All you have to do is occasionally brush them down in order to avoid their coats from getting tangled into knots.

Another thing to consider is the upkeep of their nails. They have very hard nails and once you hear them strutting in your home to a click click sound then it is time to cut the nails. If your house is made of concrete or he usually plays on concrete ground, their nails are automatically filed so there is no need to further shorten their nails.

To much cutting my damage their paws and you’d end up hurting your dog altogether. Most Akitas dislike having their nails cut and if your dog growls on you, it is better to bring him to the vet and have his nails clipped there.

Aside from the nails, since your dog’s coat is thick, beware when he sheds. Well, usually, Akita dogs shed around twice a year. They loose their undercoats to be able to grow a new one. If the weather is warmer, you can opt to give your Akita dog a warm bath. Remember not to use cold water since this will mess up the natural oils of the fur coat. You do not want to surprise your dog since they can become restless and it would be more difficult to run around the house dripping wet and soapy.

During these routine grooming, it is also the best time to search for lumps, bumps and warts. Also look for hardened calloused parts especially on the legs since they are prone to cracking one they get too dry, your dog might risk an infection if not treated at the right time. Always keep in mind that grooming your dog should begin in the earliest stage – when he is still a little puppy. Finding ways to distract your Akita will not always work since you have to maintain a transparent relationship with your dog in order to get the chore done. Ticks and fleas are mostly active during April until October. It is not good to keep your dog indoors most of the time since he needs fresh air and have to run about and strengthen his legs. A trapped dog will lead to depression and you do not want a sad and depressed dog right? Akitas are known to be lively and spontaneous and keeping them indoors will hamper their own sunshine.

These fleas are a nuisance to your dog’s health since it carries the parasite called the tapeworm. It is usually ingested when your dog scratches his body and the flea gets trapped in between his paws and he starts to clean it with his mouth. It is quite difficult to prevent this incident from happening but it is also a good thing to check and be attentive with your dog’s actions.

Part of his grooming is the brushing of his teeth. Well, it is a custom for these Akita dogs to not paw away any leftover meals form their faces. Food will turn bad and will definitely be ingested by your dog and it will be the source of food poisoning.

Brush your dog’s teeth everyday by using a special toothbrush designed for dogs. And also, use dog toothpaste. There is no special way of brushing their teeth. It is just like brushing your own. Always make sure that you clean the front fangs as well as the back. This can be tricky at times since if you have not trained your dog to keep still, you might get be bitten. But the chances of that accident from happening is quite rare since Akita dogs are known to be understanding and cooperative especially with their Alpha masters.

And also, do not worry if your dog does not know how to spit out the toothpaste. Well, it is alright so do not panic. The dog toothpaste is designed in a way that they can be ingested by the dogs without any harm happening to them. Never use toothpaste designed and created for humans. These products are not canine tested and may cause severe problems when your dog swallows it.

Akita puppies are very energetic and they love running around and having fun. They love romping around and cause mayhem wherever they go. This is the life of a 10 to 12 month old puppy. They are very curious with their surroundings and they can’t help but to jump for joy too especially when they come in contact with the people he loves – you and your family.

These Akita puppies are very affectionate and very loyal so you could really notice him following you around most of the time or even will be at your children’s side wherever they go. It is advisable though to not pamper the puppy too much since it will really weave in their system that they can do practically anything and get away with anything too.

You have to set barriers and don’t forget about routine. Animals can be trained through proper conditioning and routine is the secret to it. Since puppies need not exercise vigorously on a daily basis, you have to set some time to walk him around the garden for a few hours.

Since this breed has some health conditions particularly in their hips and other joints, it is a good idea to keep them mobile rather than allow them to sleep all day or sleep whenever they want to sleep. Everyone is accustomed to routines so teach your puppy even at his young age that when this time comes, its time to eat or walk or take a bath or play. You have to set the rules otherwise; he will be setting his own rules and imposing them on you.

Before walking time, he will be very restless so you have to see to it that your house is puppy-proofed. Secure all wires, spray citronella on things you do not want to be chewed up and you also have to give out your commands in a firm way. Mean what you say and do not treat them like your little children. When you say no you really have to say it in a firm way. Once he follows, reward him with a treat or if it is not time for snacks you can always pat his head and scratch his ears and say good boy.

You still have to put a leash on your puppy even if you will just walk him around the garden. You are not sure if a mailman would pass-by or a visitor would arrive. Akita Inus are quite territorial and even for a young age; they know who their masters are. Just hold on the leash as you walk around a couple of times until you see that he appears to tire already.

Always take him out for a walk for an hour or so. This way he can practice walking with a leash plus strengthen his muscles and realign his joints but allow him to play around too. He will like it. Akitas love it more if the whole family joins him for a walk.

It is of common knowledge that the bigger and heavier a dog is, the more he is prone to hip displacement and other joint problems. In the case of these Akita puppies, they will rapidly grow and mature to their real body and this is a real big size. They are heavy dogs around 130 pounds for males and 110 pounds for females. Since they are very affectionate, they can horse you around and leap on you to plant slobbery kisses. You have to keep in shape all the more since you can pop a rib in the process too.

There are different kinds of exercises for your growing Akita puppy. At first, they can only be walked a couple of hours every other day but as they grow stronger and bigger, you have to spend time to walk him everyday. Be considerate on the weather too. If the sun is shining too fiercely, allow him to walk at sunset. You see, Akita Puppies have thick coats so bear in mind that they could suffer a heat stroke most especially if they do not get hydrated.

Spending quality time with these Akita puppies can be difficult once you find yourself in the middle of an important presentation or deadline. It’s a good thing to share responsibilities with your family members so they too can build a relationship and a lasting bond with the puppy.

Educate your family members that they should not play tug-of-war with these puppies especially when they are leashed. The puppies will definitely love it but as they grow bigger, the simple tugs they made when they were younger could mean a different thing. These dogs are massive and possess super strength so keep the games that could lead to harm at bay.

A simple game of fetch will do since this will help in the puppy’s coordination skills and will also teach him to leap and fly. It will be a total body exercise. During winter or fierce sunny days, keep the puppy safe indoors. He can walk around the house too. If the weather is really good, let him go outside to play. He will definitely be depressed if you always keep him indoors.

Akita puppies love routines so they will also be the ones to tug at your seams when they know its time for them to take a walk. You have to be the one to initiate walk since Akitas are known to be domineering animals. They might just make you their slaves so be the one to initiate everything even though they have already gotten used to the routine. Do not wait until you dog boss you around. It should not be that way.

Whenever you are out for a walk, keep you puppy leashed at all times. This not only prevents him from running after someone else’s Frisbee or engages into a dogfight with someone else’s dog. They can be ferocious especially with other dogs and cats and even innocent rabbits.

Now that you are indeed getting closer and closer to deciding if you should really bring home that Akita Puppy that is so overwhelmingly adorable, there are just some things that you should go over with in order to fully say that you have purchased your dog legitimately and legally.

Nowadays, there are some stores that sell smuggled animals and you do not want for the animal police to come knocking at your door. Especially for these foreign blooded animals. Better safe than jailed right?

Upon purchase of the Akita puppy, you are supposed to receive the following papers:

1. Official Receipt of the purchase
2. Vaccination Certificate — if they took care of this, it should be signed by the Vet.
3. Diet Sheet
4. Wormed Dates – This shows the details and date
5. Copy of the Pedigree and Kennel Club Certificate
6. Insurance – If you bought from a breeder, they offer this. It would be advised for you to take the short term for the least.

Now that that Akita puppy is finally going home to you and your family, you have to remember to prepare a draught-free place for to sleep and rest. Help the little one adjust life without his mother and litter mates since this may also cause stress on the puppy.

Follow the same diet the breeder has started since these puppies may not like the abrupt change to their lifestyle. Supposing he has hard to find diet, well, it best to always keep in touch with the store you had the purchase or the breeder in charge. Since they grow rapidly in the first few months, good food is definitely the most important thing. You see, Akita Inus react badly to severe abrupt changes especially on home settings and their diets that is why you have to make sure you are giving him the closest you could find that can replicate the environment he got accustomed to.

Akita puppies have a hard time adjusting to new environments; technically, everyone does since you have to feel your way in a place. Do not worry since these dogs, once they mature, can easily conform to the new way of living that you have imposed. The need for playing and running is very important for the living conditions of these Akitas.

Your puppy should have a little patch of greens for himself. Considering you have a big and spacious lawn, make time to make a puppy only place so he can treat it as his own turf. You see, Akitas are quite territorial and they would want to have a place of their own. It is like defining his rank in your pack.

Always remember that Akitas have thick coats so they can feel stuffed and irritable in very small spaces. If you do live in an apartment, regular exercise could solve the stuffiness feeling of your Akita. Otherwise, you might just find your puppy in front of the air conditioner or even inside your refrigerator.

Now that the time has come for you to gladly welcome the latest addition to your family, finding the sleeping quarters for this bundle of fur can be quite difficult at first. Even though they are known to be adaptable to different living conditions, they need to feel at home first. It is quite obvious that they have spent their days in another place so it might take them a few days to adjust. Don’t worry since they can pretty much abide to the new rules and regulations of your house.

During summer or if you live in a rather humid and hot area, it is advisable to keep your Akita puppy indoor most of the time. This could be a challenge since they are prone to chewing and scratching. You have to safeguard your furniture and try to hide anything breakable for a couple of months until you figure out a way to educate him your rules.

It is a big no-no to allow the puppy to sleep in your room for a few days so he can adjust. These Akita puppies are bred to really be strong-willed and have a mind of their own. Well, there is one mental condition that is prevailing among the Akitas. It is Epilepsy. This is also hereditary since the bloodline of the Akitas is crossed with those of the German Shepherds, Poodles, German Shorthair Pointers and St. Bernards to name a few. These epileptic dogs are not to be bred anymore since Epilepsy is incurable but controlled only through proper medications. These dogs should not be placed under a stressful environment. Like humans, they should be properly taken cared of especially during seizures. Their medications are a little steep since they are downers and often are regulated by Law. Do not begin to panic once they start acting funny. Go straight to the Vet and find out what is really wrong.

There is a long list of health conditions that these Akita Inu breed has. They are difficult to train due to their strong-willed personality and they are also difficult to be quite hospitable and behaved among visitors. Well, they can be kept still in one place if they are either sick.

No one of his right mind would want to see a dog waste his life so it would be a great advice that before you really take the plunge in purchasing or adopting the cute furry Akita Inu, you have to be ready to give him some proper nutrition at all times. Food mostly high in protein content like fish is recommended.

Since they are originally from Japan, the staple food there is all about rice, fish and vegetables so this would be also best for the Akita puppy even if he is millions of miles away from the Land of the Rising Sun. These dogs do not get food frantic and eat a lot of branded dog food or little chewable food like the German Shepherds. They are happy to be fed two meals a day. Unfortunately, the Akita Inu, considered as popular as Super Man, has some health conditions that affect its eyesight. It is called Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA. This abnormality is found in some Akita puppies and sad to say, this condition is not reversible. There are quite high chances that your puppy or when he matures, can go blind.

There is another condition that affects almost 70% of the Akita breed. You can bring your puppy to the Vet and have him take a blood sample to determine if such a condition exists in your puppy. This is an ailment known as Hypothyroidism. This condition makes the dog suddenly aggressive if it is a female. Usually they are mild-mannered at times. They itch a lot but you have to make sure it not just fleas and they excrete a very musky odor.

The last condition that you have to look out for is when your puppy’s fur begins to fall out in big clumps. Now don’t think he ate something bad. They are having a health condition known as Sebaceous Adenitis. You really have to consider a trustworthy Vet to help you conquer these conditions that are quite present in the Akita breed. It is a sad situation though that all these conditions are present in your puppy after you have the Vet check him.
