Can Extracting a Baby Canine Help a Perm Come In?

by Dogs.net on August 13, 2011

Can extracting a baby canine help a permanent one erupt into the right place if the permanent one is headed towards the lips within the gum?
The orthodontist feels that pulling that baby tooth will help but the literature I read online seems to indicate it only helps if the permanent is palatally impacted. Any comments/answers/opinions/experiences?

Well, I had 3 of my baby canines removed, and the permanent teeth came in pretty quickly after that. I would take the orthodontist’s advice on this one.

Usually if the canine is impacted and not coming in it will probably not go into the right place. It may come out a bit, but odds are it will not be in the right place. Also age is a factor if your an adult with a retained baby tooth, and an impacted canaine the canine may not even come out at all.

To porition the canine in the right position, most likely the baby canine needs to be pulled and braces need to be used to move the permanent canine into the right spot.
